Obituary for Marcus E. Terwillegar

Marcus E. Terwillegar, a longtime resident of Highland, died at home on August 10, 2017 at the age of 45.

Marcus was born on November 20, 1971 in Saginaw, Michigan, the sole child of Nancy Jean Terwillegar, and was raised in Midland, surrounded by his many aunts and uncles and grandparents. Marcus met Angela Winchester at the age of four and became best friends while attending Bullock Creek High School. High school sweethearts, the couple began dating in their senior year, December 15, 1989, and were married on July 20, 1991. Following high school, Marcus attended Detla College, earned an Associate Degree in Architectural Technology and Computer Graphics from Lansing Community College and later attended Lawrence Tech. Marcus was a devoted husband, a loving father and an inspirational role model for his five children.

From a young age, Marcus showed a propensity for tinkering and drawing, and went on to become a talented designer and handyman. He enjoyed a twenty-three year career with Bobson Construction as the superintendent/designer, owned his own construction business, Terwillegar Construction, and was a licensed builder and licensed building inspector. He had a passion for the art of construction and could build or fix anything he put his mind to. Marcus was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2016, but continued life as he knew it — the work he enjoyed with Bobson Construction, and his fellowship with his church family at West Highland Baptist Church as a dedicated member and deacon. Even in failing health and intermittent hospital stays, he continued to work by phone, make home repairs, and proffer good auto advice to his children.

As an Eagle Scout, Marcus passed along his love of scouting to his three sons and was proud to be their Cubmaster. Camping was a pastime enjoyed by the entire family and many weekends in the summer the Terwillegars would travel Michigan and Ohio to enjoy the serenity of nature and a campfire. Marcus built a fire with the same patience and detail with which he built a house — he taught his children the importance of kindling and a good log cabin structure. In addition to his passion for family, construction and camping, Marcus had an affinity for anything John Deere or Bugs Bunny.

Marcus truly lived each moment with purpose and took advantage of each day. He will be remembered for his strong faith, unmatched work ethic and great love for family and friends. He fought the good fight. He finished well.

He is survived by Angela (nee. Winchester), his lifelong friend and beloved wife of twenty-six years; five children, Taylor Angela, McKenzie Jean, Zachary Marcus, Travis Connor, Dawson Raymond; his parents, Nancy Jean and Rick Weage; in-laws, Robert and Sharon Winchester; grandparents, Raymond and Jeanne Terwillegar, Letha Anthony; sister-in-law, Robin (Herb Helzer) Winchester; brother-in-law, Bob (Karen) Winchester as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, four nephews and many dear friends.
