Obituary for Margaret Porter Baker

Maragaret Porter Baker passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Arbor Hospice Facility in Ann Arbor, surrounded by family. She was 87 years old. Born in Milford on July 1, 1922, she was the daughter of William and Florence (Foote) Porter and remained a resident of Milford all her life. She graduated from the old Milford High School on Hickory Street and attended Michigan State University and the University of Grand Rapids (later Davenport University) where she studied Pharmacy.
Unbeknownst to her parents, she made a trip down to Pensacola, Florida to visit a young Navy man from Clyde who was stationed there during World War II. She and Robert W. Baker were married on August 27, 1943.
With the birth of their son, Craig on January 30, 1945, and their daughter, Barbara Jean on August 4, 1946, life was very busy. In the 1950s she attended the University of Michigan and, after her son and daughter were in high school, she finished her Pharmacy Degree at the University of Toledo where she graduated in 1964 and passed her board exams in both Ohio and Michigan.
She worked with her father who owned Porters Rexall Drugstore on Main Street (on the east side next to For Feets Sake, which was then the old post office) and remained in the store after her father sold it to Ed Foster. Later on she became assistant manager for Perry Drugs in Fenton until she traded the long drive and long hours to work with Milfords Water Department from which she retired in 1987. She and Bob spent two good winters in New Port Richey, Florida in the home theyd bought there in 82. He preceded her in death in December of 1990.
Margaret loved her home on Union Street and her gardens and yard and her family, especially her granddaughter, Brooke. Seeing her graduate from high school and then Alma College, her marriage to Chad Monteith and the birth of a great-grandson, Matthew in 2007 and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Emily early this year filled her heart with joy.

Margaret is survived by her son, Craig W., her daughter, Barbara (David) Baker Blanden; granddaughter, Brooke (Chad) Baker Monteith; great-grandchildren, Matthew Baker Monteith, Madelyn Emily Monteith; sister, Betty Lou (Edmond) Porter-Harben, and many loving extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Baker (d. 1990); sister, Wilma Harriet Porter-Aponte and parents William & Florence (nee Foote) Porter.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday, May 24, 12 PM at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 East Liberty, Milford with Rev. Deborah V. Kerr officiating. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may gather from 10 AM until time of Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arbor Hospice. For further information please call 248-684-6645.
