Obituary for Margarette Elizabeth McFarland

Margarette Elizabeth McFarland, a resident of the Milford/Highland area since 1959, died in the care of her family at Odyssey Hospice in Southfield on November 2, the Feast of All Souls, 2009. She was 95 years old. Born on December 22, 1913 in Wichita Falls, Texas, she was the daughter of Guy Mullen and Ellen (Nellie) Kinney.

She was a young single mother when she met Robert McFarland a school teacher, at a YMCA dance in Detroit. They married and lived on Detroit's west side before moving out to Milford.

Margarette served in the Civil Air Patrol during WWII and worked in retail sales and management as well as the on the line for Ex Cell O Corporation. She loved her family and raised them with a deep faith. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and garments for her growing family and playing cards, euchre, poker, pinochle and canasta, and was active with the local senior citizens. Margarette was a member of St. Mary's Church in Milford and later Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Nelson McFarland (d.1993) and her daughter, Ellen Hickman (d.2003) and her sister, Ellen Alexander (d.1999).

She is survived by her daughter Donna (the late Joseph) Kruzich of Ann Arbor, and sons, Ed, Jerry (Mary) McFarland of Milford, James, Skip (Mary) McFarland of Illinois and Bob (Sharlene) McFarland, Jr. of Milford. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, a niece, Janet (Mike) Magielski, and many dear friends, including her next door neighbor and inseparable companion, Eva Light who joins with her family in mourning her death and giving thanks to God for her long life among them.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 Harvey Lake Road in Highland on Saturday, November 14 at 10 AM. Fr. Leo Lulko will officiate. Following cremation her remains will be buried in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Highland Senior Center or Church of the Holy Spirit. For further information visit
