Obituary for Maria McCarty

Maria McCarty, a longtime resident of Milford, died peacefully on May 1, 2017 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Maria McCarty was born on July 5, 1947 in an Austrian farmhouse, the eldest child of Ukrainian parents, Michael and Natalja Kaptanowski. At the age of five, Maria and her family moved to the United States through sponsorship from an American farming family. They settled in Detroit where they welcomed Maria’s brother, Walter. Maria graduated from Fordson High School in Dearborn Heights in 1965.

In the winter of 1964, the young Maria attended a party hosted by Michael P. McCarty while he was home on leave from the United States Navy. Upon Michael’s return to duty, Maria kept in contact through letters and they dated off and on for several years. Everything changed one day when Maria invited Michael to join her on a vacation to the Bahamas — on one condition — he had to marry her. They were married on October 26, 1968 at the First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn.

The family settled in Milford in 1979, where they raised their son, Michael Jr., and daughter, Melanie, and became an active and involved member of the Milford Presbyterian Church. Maria served on the Board of Deacons, was an Elder, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and helped coordinate many funeral luncheons.

Maria was a passionate and “professional” shopper. She always had the best advice on where to find a good bargain and could tell you at which store and aisle you could find it. Maria’s jobs throughout the years showcased her passions of shopping, food and her love of people. She enjoyed working at her favorite store, Hudson’s, and organizing the baked goods and desserts at the Appeteaser Restaurant in Milford and at Colasanti’s Market in Highland. She was also a popular lunch lady at Heritage Elementary School.

Maria was well suited for motherhood. She was a selfless, kind and caring mother and a doting “Omi" to her grandsons, Cole and Jack. Maria truly cherished the time she spent with her children, and later, her grandsons. They truly became her strength and reason to fight during her nearly eight year journey with cancer.

Maria will be remembered for her tenacity for life, her unshakeable faith, her astounding strength and her genuine love for her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of forty eight years, Michael P. McCarty; son, Michael Jr.; daughter, Melanie (Chris) Corneau; grandchildren, Cole and Jack; brother, Walter (Cyndi) Kaptanowski; nephews, Scott, Adam and Erik Kaptanowski and numerous extended family members and dear friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 11 AM. Friends may visit the funeral home on Thursday from 3-8 PM. Pastor Bryant Anderson to officiate. Burial Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Michigan Humane Society.
