Obituary for Marie Raymer

Marie Raymer, a resident of Highland Township, former resident of Macomb Township, and native of Detroit, died peacefully in the care of her daughter on February 6, 2018 at the age of 92.

Marie was born on December 24, 1925 at home in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of four children to Joseph and Anna Balaban, and placed gently under the family’s Christmas tree. She grew up in Detroit during the Great Depression, an experience that taught her the importance of family and friends supporting one another.

Despite the many challenges Marie faced through her life, she overcame each adversity with quiet determination and her family and home remained her priority and strength.

Blessed with a gentle soul and an unpretentious demeanor, Marie formed close bonds with those around her — her sweet nature endeared her to the many friends, neighbors, nurses and strangers she encountered through life. Marie also formed a special bond with her grandchildren, caring for them when both parents were at work for many years, and her daughter, Susan, with whom she lived for over twenty years. Marie worked long and hard throughout the years keeping her home just so, warm and welcoming to all who entered. She loved cooking and baking and made the best pies, cookies, and cakes. Along with Christmas Eve and Christmas, Autumn was her favorite season and she often expressed how much she loved the move eleven years ago from suburban Macomb Township to rural Highland Township, where there were so many trees and radiant Fall colors to enjoy. Marie enjoyed sitting in the yard with Susan, gardening and tending to the flower beds and vegetables, feeding the squirrels, learning the names of all the birds. She enjoyed nature and the good and friendly neighbors in Highland. Ever patriotic, Marie voted in each election and kept informed on politics, current events and the goings-on in the world.

She will be remembered most of all for her big heart and passion for her family and will be especially missed by her daughter, Susan; her son, David (Mary) Raymer; grandchildren, Matthew (fiance Amy) and Tracy (Albert) Bahri. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Steele.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Raymer, a sister, Helen Balaban, brother, Walter Balaban and parents, Joseph and Anna (nee. Logan) Balaban.
