Obituary for Marilou E. Drews

Marilou E. Drews, 81 of Milford, Michigan died July 10, 2017 in Farmington Hills after living with Parkinson’s disease for the past decade.

Born June 20, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Burriette E. Elliott and the late Vera L. (nee Plant) Elliott.

As an avid reader and lifelong learner, completing the Detroit Free Press and New York Times crossword puzzles with her favorite ball point pen were mandatory components of her Sunday mornings.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Adrian College, in 1958, prior to earning a Master of Arts in Speech from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; while earning mention by “Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”.

As a charter member of the Cass City chapter of the American Association of University Women, and an active participant in a number of civil and human rights organizations, Marilou sought to promote opportunities in higher education for women and other underrepresented groups.

Her passion for the written word was shared with her students while teaching speech and English courses at colleges throughout Michigan; and as a leader of book clubs in Cass City, and Milford.

At the urging of the Honorable Martin L. Boyle, she undertook a career change when she joined the 52nd District Court in Walled Lake, later in Novi, as a court reporter where she worked until retirement.

She was married to Richard W. “Dick” Drews for many years and moved to Milford with him and their sons in 1970.

She is survived by sons, Michael Wayne Drews (Vicki) and children, Cortni, Steve, Vance, Jefferson, of Boca Raton, Florida; Mark William Drews (Tone) and children, Kaja, Benjamin Aleksander, of Stavanger, Norway; and Martin Richard "Ben" Drews (MiSuk) and son, Benjamin Frederick, of Farmington Hills, Michigan. She is also survived by her brother David Elliott, of Adrian; many nieces, nephews and relatives, as well as her loving and devoted caregiver Jennifer Poppy.

A private service was held by family at Lynch & Sons in Milford on July 13th.
