Obituary for Marilyn Marie Gmelin

Marilyn Marie Gmelin, a longtime resident of the Milford area, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 3rd at Serenity of Commerce, a memory care residence. Marilyn was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on August 10, 1934, the daughter of H. Britton and E. Marie Gibbs.

Marilyn graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1952 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters in reading from Eastern Michigan University. In 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth H. Gmelin and moved to Milford in 1955 where they both began their careers in education.

Marilyn loved children and taught kindergarten and first grade in the Huron Valley Schools and at the Kindergarten Cottage and Baker Elementary from 1955-1990. She also served as the reading specialist and media coordinator for the district until her retirement.

From a young age, Marilyn spent summers and vacations relaxing up north at the family cottage on East Point Lake. She loved being there with family and friends. Family was Marilyns passion and she never forgot a birthday or special occasion. Upon her retirement, Marilyn established a winter residence in Tucson, Arizona and appreciated traveling with her beloved husband to interesting places across the country, throughout Europe and numerous other destinations around the world.

Marilyn was an avid reader, enjoyed sewing, knitting and a variety of craft making activities. She often spent time socializing with friends, going to restaurants and enjoying movies, concerts and plays. She treasured the outdoors, feeding birds, planting flowers and gardening. She was particularly fond of hummingbirds and sunflowers.

Holidays were special times for Marilyn, she especially loved the Christmas season and buying gifts for her family. She had countless boxes of lights and decorations, but Angels were by far her favorite. Her wonderful smile could light up a room.

Marilyn was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Milford and the Ascension Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, Kenneth Gmelin; son, Paul (Carole) Gmelin of Milford; five grandchildren, Max, Maggie, Griffin, Jake and Marin; sister, Beverly Jean Gibbs; brother, Foster (RaeAnn) B. Gibbs, numerous nieces, nephews and countless other special relatives and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 8th, 11 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, 620 General Motors Rd, Milford. Friends may visit the church on Monday from 9 AM until the time of the service. Burial will take place privately on Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Marion, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Christ Lutheran Church, Serenity of Commerce Assisted Living, or the Association for Alzheimers Disease and Dementia.
