Marino Melaragni, a long time resident of Milford, died on July 1, 2013 at the age of eighty-four.
He was born on January 28, 1929 in SantElia Fiumerapido, Italy, the son of Rosato and Antonia DiManno Melaragni. As a young man he worked as a mason tender at the monastery in Monte Cassino, Italy and came to America when he was seventeen years old. His natural talent for tinkering and fixing mechanical, electrical or plumbing problems led him to a forty-seven year career with Cranbrook Education Community where he worked as the groundskeeper, stone mason and electrician. After his retirement, his Cranbrook family hosted a beautiful retirement celebration party. Marino, dubbed Uncle Sparky, cherished the time spent with his family and adored his grandchildren. Unique is the word that comes up when describing Marino. He proved that love is something that is performed, not described. He was a devoted member of St. Marys Parish in Milford and will be missed by many. Sparky has left a splendid template for a life worth living, a life never weary, a life never without charm.
In addition to Celeste, his beloved wife of sixty years, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Melaragni; his son, Russell (Kathy) Melaragni; grandchildren, Caitlin and Kevin; a sister, Concetta (Joseph) Fortuna; brothers and sisters-in-law, Phillip (Sandra) DiPonio, Anthony (Joanne) DiPonio, Jerome DiPonio, Pasqualina (Mario) Fallone, Gaetano (Judith) DiPonio, Russell (Mary Ellen) DiPonio and many nieces, nephews and dear friends who join his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them. He was preceded in death by a brother, Peter (Frances) Melaragni.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Saturday, July 6, at 10AM with Fr. Manny Chircop officiating. Entombment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, July 4, 3-6PM and Friday, July 5, 2-9PM. Rosary Friday 7PM.
