Obituary for Mario Anthony Facione

Mario Anthony Facione was born on Monday, August 14, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Ross and Mary Facione - Italian immigrants. He was the seventh of eight children. Mario was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and committed to service in his faith. He passed away at age seventy-five on Sunday, July 26, 2015.

Mario was a successful businessman and owned and operated many different businesses. He was a veteran of the 101st Airborne division where he he learned to skydive, a love and passion in his life.

Mario was deeply patriotic and honored the flag and those that served her causes. He served on the Sheriff’s Advisory Council for Oakland County and received a ‘Badge of Honor’ from the Sterling Heights Police department. He was proud of the work he did for Homeland Security and served throughout his community.

In 2004 he published an autobiography called “Mafia to Mormon: My Conversion Story” which was available across the country and published in two different languages. This led to years of book tours and hundreds of motivational speaking engagements. His story has inspired thousands of people, all over the world.

Above all of his earthly accomplishments, he was most proud of his family. He loved to talk about his family to everyone he met. He attended family events faithfully. To his grandchildren, ‘Papa’ was a big goofball and loved to tease and play with them. Whether he was having a Nerf gunfight or teaching them self-defense skills, he always had a big, memorable, contagious smile.

In 1984, a friend introduced him to a single mother in his Church named Kathy Michels. Kathy had three young children – Amy, Jeff, and Scott. Their first meeting was a blind date. They continued to court and became engaged a few months later. Eventually, they were married, and were sealed in the Jordan River Temple on April 19, 1985.

Mario’s legacy is truly his family – his wife, children, and grandchildren – all of whom carry a piece of Mario with them every day. He will be remembered for his love of his family, his love for the gospel, and the Book of Mormon. He was an active missionary. He had a strong work ethic and quirky antics. As opportunities presented themselves he found ways to teach the gospel to his family. He recently taught his grandchildren to “Love the Lord. He never gave up.” And “Stand and fight for the right.”

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Amy (husband Jeff) Day; sons, Jeffrey (wife Amanda) Goldman, and Scott (wife Leslie) Goldman. Grandchildren Riley, Hannah, Alec and Ian Day, Andrew and Callie Goldman, Adam, Alyssa and Eli Goldman; sisters, Mary Farrell and Bernice Rossi; brother, Mario Facione; nephew, Louis (Christine) Featheroff; niece, Nancy Green and much extended family and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Mary Facione, and four siblings: brothers Johnny, Tony, and sisters Angeline and Francis.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Friday, July 31, from 7PM - 8:30PM.
