Obituary for Martha Schwaninger

Martha Mae Schwaninger, long time resident of White Lake Twp., and recent resident of Milford, died at Huron Valley Hospital on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. She was 91 years old. She was born April 21, 1926. She always loved to tell people that her birth was not in the newspapers due to the newborn princess, Elizabeth, taking up all the available space. Martha and her older brother, Charles Warren were raised in St. Louis, MO by Mattie Larcom. Martha would often explain “Our mother was a single mom making around nine or ten dollars a week. My brother and I were the original latch key kids!” Martha graduated from Roosevelt High School in St. Louis where many of her friends called her “Mardy”. As soon as she was able, she found a job in a soda shop as a “soda jerk” to help bring more money into the household.

As the world marched into the 1950’s, she met Vernon Schwaninger in the Methodist Church choir. They married in 1951 and very soon after, moved to Flint, Michigan. While the couple was finally divorced after many years of marriage, Martha would explain that “the marriage itself did not turn out the way she would have preferred, but she got three fine sons out of the deal.” All three sons, Pete, Chuck and David, would agree that they got a great mom out of the deal.

In 1968, Martha started volunteering in the Oxbow Elementary School library. She thought this was a good place to help out since David was starting school there. Within a year or two, she took the job as Oxbow’s media technician, and went on to make the school library a fun and positive place for the next 25 years. (Martha was always proud to tell stories of grown kids seeing her in the local grocery store and thanking her for turning them on to books.) She was always supportive of children and loved to put a positive light on what they were doing. Beyond the library, this was true when David was in high school choir and theater. It was also true when Pete and Chuck were in the Milford High School band. Martha always had a hug and word of encouragement to her sons and to their friends. During her years as a band mom the kids affectionately called her “Mother Martha”.

Martha loved to be with people and one of her very favorite groups to be with was her church family. She always said that being with her friends at church gave her energy. She was a member of the Highland United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was very active for most of that time. Her sons and her daughter-in-laws would often encourage her to get a hobby, but now, looking back, it is clear that Martha’s hobby was being with people.

She is survived by her sons, Peter (Odina) Schwaninger, Chuck (Michele) Schwaninger, and David (Joan) Schwaninger; grandchildren, Alexander (Kelly) Schwaninger, Molly (Jerrad) Fletcher, Amanda Schwaninger, Joe (Kate) Valentine, Margaret (Leif) Cole, Jim Valentine; great grandchildren, Ethan and Katelyn Schwaninger, Freya, Kieran, and Myles Cole; her brother, Charles Warren Larcom and many dear friends.
