Obituary for Martin McDonald

Martin McDonald, a lifelong resident of Waterford Township, died unexpectedly at his home on March 23, 2019 after suffering an aortic aneurysm. He was 53 years old.

Marty was born on July 25, 1965, in Southfield, Michigan, the fifth child of six to Frank and Gloria (nee. Gretkieriwicz) McDonald. Marty grew up in Waterford near Loon Lake which fostered his lifelong love for nature and the out of doors. Following graduation from Andover High School, Marty attended Oakland University and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Baker College.

Marty was a kind, generous man with an old soul and the biggest heart. He put the needs of others above his own, often donating to various charities and would be the first to help a person in need. His ability to read and interact with people served him well in his twenty-four year career as a sales representative with the Detroit Medical Center.

Marty met Michelle White in 1988 — their eyes met and Michelle told her coworkers that he was “the one”. After a brief courtship, the couple married on May 14, 1993 and made their home in Waterford. They were soon blessed with their two children, just one year apart, Ashley and Chris.

Family was important to Marty. He was a loyal husband, a devoted father and a loved brother and son. He enjoyed quiet dates at home with Michelle, quick trips to the blackjack table at MGM and vacations to Vegas. An active father and role model, he was proud of his children and active in their lives. In his free time, he enjoyed reading fantasy books, running, chopping wood, lifting weights or watching college sports.

He will be missed by many, especially his wife, Michelle; his dear children, Ashley and Chris; his brother, Tom (Kim) McDonald; four sisters, Debbie (Jeff) Bagdon, Carol (Mike) Adler, Sherry (Tim) Roarke, Jacqueline St. Germain; in-laws, Mike and Paulette Johnson; Godsons, Nick, Kyle, Josh and Jake, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gloria.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS), 26 Peterboro, Detroit, MI 48201.
