Obituary for Marvin Ellis Olds

Olds, Marvin E., a long time resident of Milford, passed away on September 9, 2008 after battling courageously with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was 85 years old. He was the son of Harry and Maud (nee Railsback) Olds, born in Rosedale, Indiana, on March 5, 1923. Marvin met Georgiana Tolin at Indiana High School where he was President of his Class and Valedictorian. They became sweethearts and graduated together in 1941, and in January of 1943 he joined the Army Air Corp during WWII and reached the rank of Corporal. While enlisted, Marvin married the love of his life on November 3, 1944, and they began their life together of 57 years. Once discharged from the Army in 1946, he went on to attend and graduate with Highest Distinction from Purdue University, where he was also a member of the Tau Beta Pi Fraternity, an engineering honor society and the second oldest collegiate honor society in America.
They moved to Milford in 1949, and Marvin went to work for General Motors for 31 years. Marvin loved his family and was an active participant in the raising of his and Georgianas sons. Bob and Dave remember being dragged fishing to Moores Lake, with Dave recalling Bob enjoying it a bit more than himself. Most of Marvins career was spent at the Proving Grounds and for a while as Director of Engineering in Mesa, Arizona for Chevrolet, but returned to his hometown of Milford.
Marvin was one of the Milford Presbyterian Churchs longest standing members, and was active in working for the Red Cross as a volunteer, and was a diligent worker for the blood bank.
Among his many interests and hobbies were photography, coin collecting, golf and playing cards, particularly his Wednesday Poker Club. After the loss of Georgiana in 2001 and his retirement, Marvin especially enjoyed time with his best friend and next door neighbor, Glen Julian. Glen and Marvin were great companions, and shared a friendship for many years.
He is survived by his sons, Dave (Natalie) Olds, Robert (Cathryn) Olds; grandchildren, Analissa (Aaron) Reisenbigler, Zachary (Megan), Nicholas, Miranda, Jacquelyn; great grandchildren, Madison and Aiden; special cousin with whom he kept in touch, Vera Ellert; dear friend, Glen Julian and many loving extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Georgiana in 2001 and a grandson, Ethan.

Funeral Services will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 11 AM, with The Rev. Dr. R. John Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit 9 AM until time of service. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
