Obituary for Mary Ann Valenti

Mary Ann (Schaldenbrand) Valenti, a longtime resident of Beverly Hills, died in the care of her family at her residence in Hartland on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2013. She was 87 years old.

Born in Detroit on January 14, 1926, Mrs. Valenti was the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Cavanaugh) Schaldenbrand. She graduated from Immaculata High School in 1943 and from Marygrove College in 1947. While at Marygrove, she met a student from the University of Detroit, Joseph Valenti, a Navy Veteran. Their courtship resulted in their marriage on August 21, 1948. Together their family blossomed with seven beautiful daughters over the next eight and a half years.

The Valentis were long time residents of Beverly Hills and active members of St. Regis Parish in Bloomfield Hills. After fifty years of marriage, Joseph Valenti died in 1998.

Mary Ann Valenti was a great mom, whose smile could light up the room and warm the hearts of family and friends alike. Mary Ann welcomed anyone and everyone into their home over the years, and touched many people with her smile, gracious manner and overall appreciation for life. Between homemaking and parenting duties, she played poker and bridge, practiced the violin, indulged her lifelong taste for chocolate (dark chocolate!) and champagne and prayed daily for the well being of her family and wide circle of friends. For many years, she was a registered brailler for the U.S. government. Her world revolved around her family. If there was any occasion worth celebrating, all she needed was her family around her. She was a woman of deep and abiding faith who trusted in God through great joys and heartbreaks and was an example to her eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann (Etienne) Becker, Peg Valenti, Paula (Ron) Barrett, Julie (Lenny) Kuhar, JoAnn Gazal, Kathleen (Marc) Watson, Linda Valenti; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Kit Thibodeau, Sally Whalen, Carol Schaldenbrand and many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Joseph A. Valenti, granddaughter, Stephanie Kuhar, sister, Peg Deneen, son-in-law, Fred Gazal.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Sunday 2-7PM, with a scripture service at 6 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Little Church (SW Corner of M-59 and Hacker) 1991 N. Hacker Rd, Howell, MI 48843, Monday 11 AM. Fr. Francis George will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fr. Solanus Guild at 1780 Mt. Elliott or Capuchin Soup Kitchen at 1820 Mt. Elliott, Detroit MI 48207
