Mary B. Lulko, a longtime resident of Highland, saw the face of Jesus early in the morning of Tuesday, November 13, 2012. She was 96 years old. Born on St. Patricks Day in 1916, in Detroit, Mary was the oldest of Anthony and Veronica (Kanigowski) Mularskis five children. She grew up in a bilingual household and could still write in Polish. She graduated from St. Casimir High School in Detroit where she was the spelling bee champion. She met and married Leo S. Lulko and together they operated Leos market where she was the bookkeeper and he was the grocer. They raised two sons and a daughter and Leo preceded her in death in 1987. Soon after she moved in with her son, Fr. Leo Lulko, pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland where she was a dedicated and devoted member, generously sharing her gifts of deep and constant faith, her evangelizing spirit, her prayerfulness, unending kindness, openness and generosity. Mother Mary as she was known will be remembered by her church family at Holy Spirit, especially the Womens Club, her Rosary Group and the Funeral Luncheon teams.
Mary Lulko was a tiny woman with a giant heart and mighty faith in the power of prayer and the goodness of God. When asked about the secret to her long life, she always advised one to laugh a lot. She had a life-long love of words and enjoyed upword games, Scrabble and crossword puzzles. And she loved the life of service and devotion she was a perfect exemplar of.
In addition to her late husband, Leo S. Lulko, Mary was preceded in death by her son, the late Richard A. Lulko. She is survived by her son, Fr. Leo Lulko and her daughter Barbara (David) VanHellemont. She is the cherished grandmother of Debora (Steven)Marsh, David Lulko, Donald (Darla) Lulko, Dionne (Joseph) Wetzel, Darice
(James) Hoffman, Julie VanHellemont and Mary (Thomas) McCarley. Also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and her large and extended parish family at Holy Spirit who join with her family in mourning the death of dear Mother Mary, and giving thanks to God for her life among them.
Family will receive friends at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 Harvey Lake Road, Highland, MI 48356 (248) 887-5364, on Wednesday, November 14, 3-9PM and Thursday, November 15, from 12-9 PM. Rosary Thursday at 7 PM in the church. Mass of the Resurrection on Friday, November 16, at 10 AM. Contributions may be sent in honor of Mary to Church of the Holy Spirit, or your favorite charity.
