Mary Elberta Young (nee Weakland), a resident of Clinton Township and former resident of Highland and White Lake Townships, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2009. She was 86 years old. The youngest of Joseph & Annie Weakland's twelve children, Mary was born in Cambria County, Pennsylvania on February 20, 1923 and grew up in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania where through her schooling she became known by her middle name, Elberta, in order for the teacher to distinguish her from another Mary in the classroom. Following her graduation from High School she was convinced by her sister, Dorothy to attended a dance at Charlie's Grove. Not entirely giddy to dance the night away, she was unexpectedly swept off her feet by a young man named Willard Young. Following that memorable dance, Elberta knew that he was the one.
Their journey began when they came to Michigan in the early 1940's. Their lives would change at the break of WWII as Willard served in the United States Army and Elberta worked in one of many automotive plants converted for the production of artillery during wartime. Following Willard's return home they were married on his birthday, November 24, 1945. They then continued their journey by making their home in Detroit where they raised their daughter, Deborah. Like most men and women of their generation, they believed in hard work and frugal spending. While her husband worked in automotive production, Elberta worked as a supermarket cashier and price-checker in addition to being a homemaker. Together, they made a wonderful team. In retirement, Elberta made many lasting friendships through the Milford Senior Center, Church of the Holy Spirit-Women's Auxiliary, and through activities both she and her husband enjoyed with the V.F.W. Post #2269 in Farmington Hills.
In 1993, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years. Through her great faith in God and the love & support of her daughter and grandchildren, Elberta regained the strength to enjoy the years that followed.
In addition to her loving daughter, Deborah Favenyesi of Clinton Twp., Elberta is survived by her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Leslie, Brandon Ramsay, Alex (Jackelyn) Favenyesi and great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ramsay and Devin Leslie. Her sisters, Betty Cahill of Johnstown, PA and Dorothy Fowler of Sumter, SC; numerous extended family members and many dear friends join in mourning her passing while giving thanks to God for Elberta's life among them. A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Thursday, December 10th at 2PM with Fr. Leo Lulko officiating. Burial Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit on Thursday from 12PM until time of service. Memorials are encouraged to the American Diabetes, Heart & Lung and Alzheimer's Associations.
