Obituary for Mary M. Comazzi

Mary Comazzi passed away peacefully on May 18, 2016. She was born Mary Maddalena Strianese on November 2, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York as the fifth of seven children to Italian immigrants, Teresa (Guidice) and Sabato (Sam) Strianese. She spent her formative years in New York and attended elementary school in the upper west side of Manhattan, along with the daughters of the Kraft (Foods) family and Babe Ruth. She attended Barnard College, NY, studying piano and the arts. She enjoyed all kinds of needlework, generously sharing her talents with family and friends. Mary enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking her favorite Italian recipes. She enjoyed dancing with Joseph and they were a striking, elegant couple on the dance floor. Mary worked in several women’s clothing stores in NY and NJ where she was admired for her eye for fashion. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing bridge and volunteered for many years in libraries and local hospitals. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In 1937 on a vacation to the Poconos in Pennsylvania, she met her future husband, Joseph Comazzi. They were married on June 8, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY. They spent their early married years in Queens, NY where they began their family, eventually settling in Wantagh, Long Island, NY where they raised their family, then moving to New Jersey in 1960. In 2005, they moved to Michigan to be closer to family. They spent the following years enjoying their grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s many activities. Mary was a life-long Catholic. She and Joseph had three sons: Anthony (Lynne), Robert and Joseph (Laurie). Mary has nine grandchildren, Teresa (John) O’Toole, Joseph (Mary), Gina (Anthony) Hockstad, John (Ashley), Christian, Katie (Reynolds) Allen, Mary (John) Bermingham, Jorma (Nikki) and Jenna (Lou) Angelo. She also has 18 great-grandchildren and her one surviving sister, Lydia Milo. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 72 years, Joseph Comazzi, son, Joseph, two sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will be held at Lynch Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Steet, Milford, on Sunday, May 22, from 3-6PM, with a Vigil Service at 6PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows, 1955 E. Commerce Road, Milford, on Monday, May 23 at 10AM with Fr. David Harvey officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, of Memphis, TN 38105.
