Obituary for Matthew H. Malty

Matthew H. Malty, a resident of Milford and 2003 graduate of Milford High School, died in his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, May 23, 2009 after a brave battle with cancer. He was 24 years old.
Born in Farmington Hills, Michigan on September 24, 1984, the son of Arthur & Patricia Malty, Matthew spent the first four years of his childhood in Canton before his family moved to their longtime home in Milford. He attended Johnson Elementary and Muir Middle School before graduating from Milford High School in 2003. Matt was very brightschool always came easy for him. He enjoyed the challenge of playing sports, especially hockey which he played on travel leagues before joining the Milford High Hockey team his junior year. Following high school graduation, he pursued his interests in becoming an FBI agent, obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice from Lake Superior State University in 2007. For six years through college, Matt worked at the Coca-Cola company and enjoyed the opportunity and camaraderie he found with the company. He progressed quickly through the ranks, eventually becoming Account Manager. He was extremely grateful for his personal and professional friendship shared with his boss, Dave Rushing. Matt was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2007. Through his optimistic perspective and support from family and many friends, his wonderful personality and sense of humor was never overshadowed by his health and treatment.
Matt loved racing cars, go-carts and sprint cars. He was less interested in automotive mechanics or getting his hands dirty and preferred to be the driver. Always taking pride in his appearance, he was extremely charming and could even convince his sister Alison to wash his car for him so he could avoid the labor. Matt also possessed and amazing capacity and recall for sport statistics and was an avid fan of Detroits Red Wings and Tigers. His sharp personality and knowledge made him well suited to play the agent for his sister as she applied to various colleges and eventually earned a Hockey scholarship with Niagara University. Matt was especially grateful for his friends. He was hopeful to visit as many arenas and stadiums as he could and just one week before hed have to undergo treatment in the hospital, his friends took him to see the Air Canada Centre, home arena to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Another memorable trip was the Maltys family visit to Disney World; a trip organized and paid for through their gracious and thoughtful friends. Matt will be remembered as a strong leader in the face of lifes most challenging adversities. By his strength and personal story, he has taught us all to enjoy life thoroughly and love family and friends unconditionally.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Julius & Virginia Mynek and Arthur & Edith Tiny Malty.
He is survived by his beloved parents, Arthur & Patricia Malty; loving sister, Alison; favorite aunts & uncles, Robert (Barbara) Mynek, Jim (Cindy) Jankowiak and Bev (Fitz) Fitzpatrick, Artie (Gordon) Pendrick, Sandy (Dave) Blasutti; numerous cousins and several loving friends, including Brent, Jenna, Jay, Justin, Traci and Dave.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford on Wednesday, May 27 at 10AM with Fr. Ron Anderson officiating.
