Obituary for Matthew Robert Serwinek

Matthew Robert Serwinek, a resident of Northville MI., died on October 1, 2018 after a yearlong battle with Leukemia. Matt was 50 years old.

Matthew Serwinek was born February 16, 1968. Since his parents, Paul and Marlene, were married very young, Matt learned about life along with them. He later became a big brother to sisters, Alissa and Kathryn. Matt grew up as a contented, happy child. From early on he was always calm and easy-going and seldom would ever become annoyed. He lived that way throughout his life. Matt grew up in Milford, Michigan. He graduated from Lakeland High School and went on to get a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Software Engineering was his career but his true vocation was "Language." He was the "go-to" person for questions about the intricacies of the English language and was fluent in Russian and French. For the sheer enjoyment of it, he later received a Masters of Arts Degree in French Classical Literature. Hand in hand with his love of language was his love of travel. While still in college, he spent one summer traveling across Europe with a friend exploring country after country. After graduating from college and several years of work in the corporate world, he decided to take a year off. He spent that entire year living in France and absorbing the French culture before coming back home to continue his career. Later in life, he made regular visits to the Ukraine, practicing his Russian and enjoying the Slavic culture.

Matt had many friends and was careful to keep up friendships with grade school, high school and college friends. He was a great conversationalist and enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life and even talking to strangers. He also had a love of nature and enjoyed hiking and walking in parks across the country. He'll be remembered for his sense of humor and infectious laughter. No doubt due to his extensive travels and varied interests, he was one of those guys who seemed to have most of the answers when sitting around with a group of friends watching the TV show, Jeopardy. A good gauge of his character was displayed when he first spent several months in the hospital. He observed a number of patients in rooms on the same floor as him never had visitors. He vowed that once he got well he'd like to start visiting hospitals to speak to and comfort the lonely. Even though Matt's life was cut short, he lived over half a century on earth and was one of those people who thoroughly enjoyed every minute. He will be greatly missed.

Matt is survived by his loving parents, Paul and Marlene; sisters, Alissa Sparks and Kathryn (Andrew) Van Fossen; nephews, Adam and Peter Van Fossen; aunt, Sally Findlay; uncles, Mark (Maryann) Struman, Daniel (Kathy) Serwinek and Mark Serwinek; cousins, T.J, Darren, Monica, Molly, Jason, John, Meagan, Mark, Nathan and Holly. He was also survived by many close friends and extended family members.

Matt was preceded in death by his uncle, John (Linda) Struman.
