Obituary for Maureen Therese Simms

Maureen Therese Simms (nee. Shook) passed away peacefully at home, Thursday January 27, 2022 after a 4-year battle with colorectal cancer. She always had a positive attitude and never complained about her illness. Her strong faith helped her get through her ordeal.

Maureen is survived by her husband, David Simms; children, Amanda Princz (spouse Victor), Eric Simms (spouse Christine), Kevin Simms (spouse Morgan) and Abigail Kowalsky (spouse Kyle). She also has three grandchildren: Gabriel age 5 (Amanda), Maxwell age 3 (Eric) and Warren age 3 months (Kevin) and another on the way in June (Amanda). Maureen was raised in a large family on a 260-acre farm built by her great-great grandfather in Fulton Michigan. Her siblings include Lyn Wilson (Mike), Chis Shook (Katherine), Steve Shook (Jo Ellen), Marianne Kuiper (Joe), Tim Shook (deceased), Larry Shook (partner Darla Cook), Bob Shook, Pauline Giacobone (Mark) and Kathleen Waldron (Steve). Maureen also has numerous nieces and nephews.

Maureen is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Adele (nee. Hoy) Shook and her brother, Timothy Shook.

Maureen’s mother, Adele Hoy was from Kempsey, NSW Australia. Her mother met her father, Robert Shook, who was on leave in Sydney, Australia during WWII where he was involved in the fighting the South Pacific. He proposed to her after three days, she said yes and then joined him two years later in Fulton, Michigan and were subsequently married and began their family. Maureen has numerous cousins in Australia and made several trips there.

Maureen worked at Carl’s Family YMCA in Milford for 20+ years, originally at the front desk and later became the office manager. Early in her career, she was a flight attendant for North Central Airlines which later became Republic, then Northwest and eventually Delta. David and Maureen met at Lake in the Woods apartment complex in Ypsilanti, Michigan in June, 1978. They were married in Mendon, Michigan in September, 1980 where her parents were also married.

Maureen was a member of the St. Mary Parish in Milford and was very involved with the music program. She was in the adult choir, led the teen New Covenant group and sang in the Grace Song group. Music was her passion, and she had a professional level singing voice. She also played piano and violin. She majored in voice and violin at Western Michigan University where she completed 2 years before she started her flight attendant career.

She was an avid reader, loved cross word puzzles, and was a walking enthusiast, often walking 5 to 8 miles a day before her illness. She was extremely passionate about her grandchildren who referred to her as “Nini”.

She will be greatly missed by her husband and family. She was a force of nature with a great inner strength and is now at peace in heaven.
