Obituary for Michael Anthony Turner

Michael Anthony Turner, a resident of Highland and former resident of Commerce Township, passed away on February 6th, 2009. He was 39 years old. Born on December 16, 1969 in Royal Oak, the son of Matthew Turner and Muriel Hollerud, Mike grew up in Walled Lake, where he was a graduate of Walled Lake Central High School. At the age of eighteen he began his work as a tradesman and started his own business, Milford Tile and Marble, which he has operated for the past twenty years. He was among the best in his work and had an artist's vision in his custom designs in tile, marble, and granite. It was in a weight lifting class in 1987 that Mike met Wendy Skorupski. However, it was not until 1992 that they fell in love. They were married in Farmington on August 20th, 1993. They first made their home in Commerce where they were blessed with the births of their sons, Michael, Jr. and Johnathan.
Weight lifting and bodybuilding were Mike's passion and a big part of his life. He has been a member of Huron Valley Pools and Fitness and has been an inspiration to many body builders, friends at the gym, and students at Walled Lake Central where his name had held the lifting record for many years. A true renaissance man, Mike was just as at home in the outdoors, or about his work, as he was discussing science, computers, technology gadgets, politics, and history. Always learning, he enjoyed watching the Discovery channel, science programming, and CSI shows. He loved opportunities to deer hunt with his brother Matt, father-in-law John, brother-in-law Steve, and Dan Ortner. They had enjoyed special hunting trips out west in Wyoming which Mike has described as one the most beautiful places on Earth. He was happy to bring home his favorite food (meat) to prepare on his barbecue. Mike found great enjoyment spending time with his boys building and fixing things for them, helping with Cub Scouts, and coaching baseball and flag football. The family has some of their favorite memories camping at Disney, Smokey Mountain National Forrest, and even while in the rain! Above everything, Mike was intensely loyal and a great protector for his family and friends and the people he cared about. He was a "gentle giant" who will be dearly missed by all including his dogs, Ted and Carson.

In addition to his beloved wife, Wendy, and loving children, Michael and Johnathan, he is survived by his mother, Muriel Wilcox of VA; father, Matthew (Marilyn) Turner of West Bloomfield; brother, Matt (Kim) Turner; sister, Justine Markland; ; father and mother-in-law, John and Cheryl Skorupski; brother-in-law, Steve Skorupski, grandmothers, Dorothy Liley, Mary Robinson, Phyllis Skorupski and nephew, Derek Markland. He also leaves his uncle Tom, aunt Susie, many extended family members and amazing friends, who join his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Road, Highland, on Wednesday, February 11th, at 10AM. Friends may visit at the church from 9AM until the time of Mass. Memorials may be made in his name to Boy Scout Troop 172, 1200 Atlantic Street, Milford, 48381 or to Hartland Tae Kwon Do, 2755 Arena Drive, Hartland, MI 48353.
