Obituary for Michael Jeffery Zahul

Michael J. Zahul of Highland Township died at Karmanos Hospital on Sunday, December 19, 2021, while surrounded by his wife and three children. He was 61 years old.

Born in Dearborn on March 1,1960, Mike was one of four children of George and Mary Ellen Zahul. He was a rambunctious child and enjoyed riding his mini bike on the grounds of Woodworth School not far from his house on Ternes Street. Mike also enjoyed spending summers with his family at Camp Dearborn in Milford. He graduated from Fordson High School and Wayne State University. He obtained his Certified Public Accountant license shortly after college.

Mike met Nancy in 1978 at Uncle Sam’s Disco in Redford. They shared a love for music and dancing that continued throughout their lives. They married in 1986 at St. Clements Church in Dearborn and purchased a tiny house on Lower Straits Lake in 1988. Mike was a do-it-yourself carpenter and renovated many homes as the family moved throughout the Lakes area. Mike and Nancy eventually moved to a small lake in Highland Township where Mike put his sweat into completely landscaping the entire lakefront and building a five-car garage.

Mike was self-employed. He could have worked for one of the Big 4 accounting firms, but instead chose to have a career which gave him the flexibility to be there for his three children during the years when they were active in hockey, soccer and gymnastics. This flexibility also allowed Mike to take his family to Walt Disney World and Daytona Beach, which became annual family events for many years.

Mike had several hobbies. He loved to waterski, but his passion was barefooting. He took numerous trips to Florida with his ski buddies to take lessons from various professional barefooters, and he became very good at it. FlowRiding was something Mike enjoyed and he always looked forward to his time on the FlowRider whenever he cruised. Mike also loved to dance, and he accumulated quite a group of friends in the dance community. His most-loved hobby was to tinker in the garage. Throughout his life, he built numerous off-road vehicles, driving them at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and various mud bogs. Mike could fix anything, and he was everyone’s first call when something went wrong.

Mike was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and will be in our hearts forever!

Mike is survived by his wife, Nancy (nee. Valentine) Zahul; his children, Morgan (Chuck) Smith, Tyler (Jen) Zahul and Callie (Dan) Stoscup; his grandchildren, Charlie, Julian and Savannah; his siblings, George Zahul, Sue Zahul and Sharon Zahul; his puppy, Harvey, as well as many dear friends and extended family members.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, George H. and Mary Ellen Zahul.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 26, 2021 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford, MI 48381 from 3:00PM to 6:00PM.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, December 27, 2021 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9086 Hutchins Rd, White Lake, MI 48386. Family and friends may begin gathering at 10:00AM. Following Monday's service, all are encouraged to join with Michael's family in the Church Fellowship Hall, where a luncheon will be prepared in his memory.

Mike battled Multiple Myeloma for six years and there is currently no cure. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation in his name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (Link located Below) so that one day soon there is a cure.

Mike’s son, Tyler, donated his stem cells to give Mike the best chance in his survival against Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Mike did not have a 100% bone marrow match and children can only be a 50% match. We ask that you consider becoming a donor in the hopes that anyone in this position is able to find a match. You can join today at Be The Match (Link located below).
