Obituary for Mike Collison

Mike Collison, a resident of Milford, died after a 19-month battle with pancreatic cancer on August 23, 2019 at the age of 47.

Mike was born on February 6, 1972 in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Robert and Marsha (nee. Cline) Collison. From an early age, Mike displayed an outgoing, happy nature and a propensity for sports. He graduated from Northwest High School in Jackson and was a multi-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball, baseball and track. Following high school, Mike earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and his Master’s degree in Education from Michigan State University. Mike enjoyed his 23 years teaching first grade at Carpenter Elementary, in Lake Orion. In fact, Mike was always proud to say that he was never smart enough to graduate from first grade.

In October of 1991, Mike Collison met the young Tina Schivley Collison through a mutual friend at Michigan State University. They enjoyed many years of friendship while enjoying the ‘Green and White’ college experience and were eventually married on June 15, 1996. First residing in Novi, Michigan and three years later, made their home in Milford. Mike loved all things sports-related and, of course, Michigan State. Mike was drawn to a profession where he could impact the minds of today’s youth, and he didn’t stop at the classroom. Mike, the consummate sports fan, found another passion in coaching the youth of Milford. He was an active coach on his son’s flag football, Mustang football, basketball and baseball teams, and a couple seasons coaching his daughter’s basketball teams. Mike was the kind of person you would want around your kids (both in the classroom and on the playing field!) - always smiling, positive, encouraging, instructing and looking out for the best interest of the individual. Most of all, Mike loved his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving father. His children were his greatest joy — he was a proud coach and their biggest cheerleader in the stands. He will always be remembered for his enthusiasm, his motivating, generous spirit and the impact and legacy he left with his family, his many friends, past students and kids he coached, and all those he met.

He leaves his beloved wife, Tina; his dear children, Emma and Brady; his parents, Bob and Marsha Collison; his brother, Jim (Karrie) Collison; in-laws, Bill and Sue Schivley; brother-in-law, Steve (Natalie) Schivley; niece, Alexis Schivley; nephew, Mason Schivley; close Milford ‘framily’ members, extended family members, and many many friends.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on August 26, 2019 from 2-8 PM.

A Funeral Service will be held at Oak Pointe Church, 1250 S. Hill Rd., Milford on August 27, 2019 at 11 AM. Cremation will follow.

Friends are encouraged to wear their favorite MSU gear in honor of Mike.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Collison Family Support Fund, established in August 2019 and will support the family he left behind. Distributions will be made to support the kids’ academic future. The GoFundMe link is provided here:
