Obituary for Murray William Barker

Murray William Barker, 96, of Cheboygan, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2018, surrounded by family at his home on Lake Huron.

Born October 25, 1922, in Detroit to Robert James and Inez W. Barker, Murray attended Cooley High School and married Lila E. Carmen, on September 11, 1942. Murray and Lila had two children, Susan Marie and Robert William.

He was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver before returning to school and earning his refrigeration engineering license. Murray retired from Ford Motor Company in Dearborn in 1987, where he was employed for 20 years.

Listening to music and dancing with Lila, the love of his life, was what Murray treasured most. They were married for 74 years. Murray played trumpet in his high school band. He enjoyed hunting in his earlier years and shot an 8-point buck in the Upper Peninsula. After retiring, he enjoyed cross-country skiing and submitted a patent for the “ski claw.”

He was a longtime member of the Masonic Wolverine Lodge No. 484, F. & A. M. in Detroit.

He is survived by son Robert and (Mary) Barker, of Cheboygan, Mich., son-in-law Douglas Drahota, of Valparaiso, Ind., five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are Lisa and (Rick) Wallace, of Westfield Ind., Laura and (Aaron) Kocher, of Valparaiso, Ind., Lana and (Scott) Lavengood, of Westfield, Ind., Drew and (Rachel) Barker, of Skandia, Mich., and Glen and Allyson Barker, of Traverse City. His great-grandchildren are Elizabeth and Nate Wallace, Ava, Luke and Abigail Lavengood, Lake and Forest Barker and Boyd Barker.

He was preceded in death by wife Lila Barker, daughter Susan Marie and sister Elizabeth Golm.
