Obituary for Nancy C. House

Nancy C. House, a resident of Fowlerville, and former resident of Detroit and Southfield, passed away in the home and care of her daughter, Ann Marie on April 29, 2009 after an extended illness due to a stroke. Born in Detroit on January 29, 1927, Nancy was the oldest of nine children by parents Nunzio and Florence Cessante, Italian immigrants. While growing up in Detroit Nancy was instrumental in helping raise her eight younger brothers and sisters. Following high school Nancy began her career as a teller for the Bank of the Commonwealth in downtown Detroit.

On September 29, 1953 Nancy married Robert C. House and together began their family that continued to grow over the years in their Southfield home. Her experience in raising her siblings prepared her well for raising her own six children and managing a large family; she was admired as a provider and true matriarch. Nancys home always had an open door, an extra seat at the table, and a welcome from her that included a greeting of, "Are you hungry", along with a genuine concern for your well-being. Her meals were always prepared with love and her own homemade ingredients, her deep-dish pizza and spaghetti sauce were legendary.

Nancy had a deep, unfaltering faith, and had been a member of many churches over the years, including St. Sabina, St. Ives, Our Lady of Victory, St. Bernadette, and in recent years enjoyed attending St. Mary's in Milford. She was also very grateful for the support of Fr. James and St. Agnes Catholic Church in Fowlerville. She loved to sing in church, and was always active in the church's choir, as a former opera singer she helped to carry the hymns---a memorable experience for her children who sat next to her each week. Nancy was always ready to help support the church, family and friends. She volunteered for many years as a teacher for children with disabilities. Nancy loved Bingo at the churches, and any opportunities to play her favorite slot machine at the local casinos, the Elvis slot machine will miss her.

Nancy was a great role model for her family, through all her health problems, she always wore a smile and remained positive, even when she couldn't lead the great conversations and meals she loved so much. As time went on, Nancy gained an ever-growing appreciation for the love of nature and the life that surrounded her. One of the lessons she taught her children was, "You have to learn to deal with life, and you have to learn to deal with death. This great woman will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Nancy is survived by her children, Robert C. House II, Nancy C. Nordstrom, Michael J. House, Christopher House, Cathy (Phil) Mattscheck, Ann Marie (Bob) Witt; grandchildren, Robby, A.J., Jessica, David, Samantha, Brock, Brian, Brooke, Kelsey, Matthew, Evangelene, Darnel, Buddy and Bear; great grandchildren, Justin and Jordan; siblings, Rose Milavec, Celestine Cessante, Martha (Bill) Thompson, Virginia (John) Ardley, Vincente Cessante; sister-in-law, Irene (the late Phil) House; aunt, Mary (Tom) Waling and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. House, parents, Nunzio and Florence Cessante, brothers, Julius Cessante, Nunzio "Butch" Cessante, a sister, Florence Cessante and a grandson, Justin.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Road, Milford, on Monday, May 4th, at 11AM with Fr. Ron Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Saturday 2-9PM, Sunday 2-9PM and after 10:30AM at the church on Monday. A Vigil Service will be held on Sunday at 7PM. Memorials may be made in her name to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
