Obituary for Nancy Joan Palermo

It is with great sadness that the family of Nancy Joan Palermo announces her death on Friday, January 5, 2018, at the age of 81 years old.

Nancy Joan Palermo (Kemp) was born in Detroit in 1936 to Alfred and Minnie Kemp. After graduating from Mackenzie High School, she began working at Detroit Bank and Trust. While working as a teller, Nancy met her husband, Joe Palermo. After marriage, Nancy and Joe began their family while living in Detroit. Nancy put her bank career on hold while raising their four children, Michael, Steven, Karen and John. The family moved to Commerce Township in 1973, wanting a rural lifestyle for their growing family. She was an efficient homemaker, a creative cook and believed that outdoor play was highly beneficial for her energetic children. After raising her family, Nancy returned to her bank position, working until her retirement in the early 1990’s. Shortly after Joe’s sudden death in 1997, Nancy sold the family home and moved to Fenton, where she lived until her passing.

Nancy enjoyed crafts, often exploring the current trends in creativity. Every Christmas she would present her children with a home décor item she had made especially for holiday giving. In addition to her creativity, Nancy was an avid reader, she favored murder mysteries. She had a natural skill for numbers, and for many years she would play the lottery, hoping that she had the winning ticket. In her later years, she turned her attention to a family football pool. She would keep a detailed notebook, full of teams and final scores, recording each weekly win and loss. Up until her recent illness, she was a committed NFL fan, rarely missing a game.

She is survived by her children Michael (Deborah) Palermo, Steven (Melane) Palermo, Karen Palermo, and John Autumn) Palermo; grandchildren Christopher (Dayna Brandow), Derek, Kyle, Alivia (David) Ashman, Mitchell (Katherine) Palermo, and Garrett and Alexa Bowles; great grandchildren Colton Palermo and Charlotte Wren Ashman; siblings Ron (Fran) Kemp and Betty (Al) Fergin .

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Charles Palermo, and her sister, Virginia Branch.

A funeral service will be held at Lynch and Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Tuesday January 9, at 12:00 pm. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:00 am until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to American Lung Association and American Cancer Society.
