Obituary for Neoma Gertrude Harris

Neoma Gertrude Harris, a long time resident of Milford, passed away peacefully on January 16th, 2022. Neoma’s life was a life to be celebrated. She lived for 101 years, 7 months and 11 days. That in itself is an accomplishment, and a true testimony to her faith and strength that her family will forever cherish.

In her life she loved, and lost, her mother when she just 20 years old, and her first born son, from a brain aneurism at 3 months old. Her first marriage ended in heartbreak and divorce, but then she found a true love and 22 years of happiness before losing her second husband, Carl Harris.

Neoma had a passion for traveling within the country from Alaska, California, Washington, including a train trip through the mountains, to the east coast such as Maine, Vermont and Connecticut, then back through many of the southern states. Her passions then expanded to countries around the world, that included Ireland, Scotland, England, Central America (including Honduras), then British Columbia. She enjoyed many of the trips with Carl, and then with her friends later on.

She was the matriarch of her family and loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Neoma loved time with her family, especially the grandchildren. There was nothing she loved more than having time to snuggle and play with the babies and little ones. And they loved her.

Neoma’s time as secretary at the Milford Presbyterian Church was a cherished time for her. She loved serving God through the workings of the church and she made many lasting and cherished friendships while she was there. On her 100th birthday in 2020, she received many cards of birthday wishes and congratulations from members of the church who knew her, and even some who didn’t know her. That was a gift to her and she read and reread those cards, and then put them into an album to keep them safe.

She will be sorely missed by her family, and her close friends. But memories will keep her in their hearts and they’ll forever be thankful for having had her in their lives.

Daughter of the late Owen and Mamie Newman, Neoma is survived by her children, Richard (Perla) Poynton, and Twyla Tripp; step son, Frank Harris; daughters-in-law, Linda and Mary Ellen Harris; grandchildren, Kelly (Ron) Loula, Carrie Tripp, Brian Poynton, Jennifer (Jeff) VanDenBrouck, Vicky Poynton; step grandchildren, Donna Harris, Scott (Kate) Harris, Dana (Chuck) Harris St. John, Nancy (Jay) Harris, and Kent Harris; great grandchildren, Mackenzie (Garrit) Otten, Delanie VanDenBrouck, and Abigail VanDenBrouck; also many extended family and dear friends.

Neoma is preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Carl Harris; son, Bradford Lee Poynton; brother, Lloyd Newman.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, MI 48381, on Wednesday, January 19th, 2022 at 5:30 PM. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 PM until the time of service.
