Obituary for Norma R. Martin

Norma R. Martin, a longtime resident of Livonia & Howell, expired peacefully on November 13, 2017 at the age of 88.

Norma was born on October 4, 1929 in Dearborn, Michigan, the daughter of Thomas Turchan and Kristina Moj, immigrants from Czechoslovakia.

Norma thoroughly enjoyed the arts, drawing, painting, violin & playing piano in her early stages of childhood through her adult life. She grew up a participating in gymnastics, calisthenics and the social gatherings with family and friends that Sokol Detroit provided and was member for 60 years.

At one of those gatherings in particular Norma met the love of her life at a dance at the Sokol Hall. In June of 1951, Norma married Edwin G. Martin and they resided in Dearborn, MI and they also built a cottage at Sokol Camp in South Lyon, MI. Eddy worked as an office manager and Norma worked as a secretary for a small business and later stayed home to raise their four children.

In addition to raising their four children, she continued her creativity by sewing clothing for her daughters and developing a love of cooking. Here inspiration was Julia Child. Her children still remember a particular Thanksgiving with Turkey, Roast Duckling, with all the trimmings including oeufs en glee, not particularly a family favorite to this day but made it a memorable holiday.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin G. Martin in 1989 and her brothers, Frank and Thomas Turchan. She is survived by her Son, Jeffrey (Janice) Martin; daughters: Karen (John, Jr.) Littleton, Lisa (Richard) Orbain, II, Marisa (Gordon) Sterling; grandchildren; Jennifer (Dan ) Herrington, Kimberly (Collin) O’Shaughnessy, Katherine Martin, John Michael (Lindsey) Littleton III, Patrick Littleton, Kristina Littleton, Richard Orbain III, Matthew Orbain, Michael Orbain, Steven Orbain, Lindsey Sterling, Harrison Sterling, Scott Sterling; great-granddaughter, Brinnley Herrington; brother, Robert (Bob) Turchan, as well as nieces, nephews extended family members and friends.

There will be a private graveside service for immediate family members at Glen Eden Cemetery, Livonia on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in her name to Sokol Detroit: Sokol Charitable Funds, 36367 Dardnella, Livonia, MI 48152 or to the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Michigan Chapter, 25200 Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48033.
