Obituary for Peter Lawrence Higgs

Dr. Peter Lawrence Higgs, a resident of Alma, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 from complications due to Alzheimer�s at the age of 72.

He was born on October 20, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. Peter lived a full and adventurous life, dedicated to his family and to the field of education. His bachelor�s degree in philosophy was earned at Monteith College at Wayne State University. Subsequently he taught at Durfee Junior High School in Detroit then taught on the Navajo reservation at Fort Wingate, New Mexico. He earned a master�s degree in African studies from Utah State University, and his last degree was a Ph.D. in International Comparative Education from UCLA. Much of the rest of his career was spent overseas in Zambia, Malawi, Namibia and Ethiopia working as an Educational Specialist for local governments under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme, UNESCO, and USAID. His last position was as Associate Professor at Central Michigan University in social studies teacher education. He retired in 2005.
Peter was a member of the Livonia Christadelphian church.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen Randall Higgs; his daughter, Alena (Tom) Higgs Dooner; and sons, Derek (Teresa) Higgs and Alan (Gabi) Higgs; grandchildren, Alexander, Kevin, Kirsten, Ariel, Mackenzie, Ailis; great-grandchildren, Anabelle and Kaden; his sister, Ruth (Earl) Stinchcomb. Peter was preceded in death by his mother and father, Beryl Dowrick Higgs and Edward Higgs, immigrants from Cornwall, England.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 3 PM with gathering beginning at noon. Burial Oakland Hills Cemetery, Novi on Monday, December 22nd at 11 AM.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Christadelphian Bible missions, 36516 Parkdale, Livonia, Michigan 48150 or to the Alzheimer�s Association.
