Obituary for Ralph James Hopkins

Ralph James Hopkins, a former resident of Wixom, White Lake, and Fowlerville, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2008. He was 88 years old. Born on November 24, 1919 in Wixom, the son of pioneer farmers Ben and Alice (Palmer) Hopkins, Ralph grew up on the family farm near what is now Proud Lake Recreation Area. A lifelong farmer, he started farming with his father. He went on to farm in Commerce and White Lake Township. Later, he expanded the operation to Livingston and Ingham counties. For most of his life, he was a grain farmer producing corn, wheat, hay and soybeans. He was a real farmer, a hard worker who had a feel for the land and the tools, and who was always a great mechanic as he embraced the changes in his field over the years. He lived through a time of great changes in agriculture, from horses to large, modern machinery. His love of farming kept him on his tractor into his late seventies.
Throughout the years, Ralph loved the out-of-doors. As a boy, he hunted, fished, and trapped on the Huron River. He enjoyed deer hunting up North. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at his favorite restaurants, going to Frankenmuth, and taking many family vacations, including trips to all of the 50 states, Australia, England, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Canada.
He is survived by his daughter, Martha (James) Rarus of Commerce Township, son, Robert Hopkins of Williamston, daughter-in-law, Beverly; grandchildren: Andrew, Rachel, and Laura Rarus and Kimberly, Benjamin, Brian, and David John Hopkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Alice (Palmer) Hopkins and his wife Elizabeth (Long) in 1999.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Saturday, August 2, at 11 AM with Reverend John Harris officiating. The burial is at Commerce Cemetery. Friends may visit on Friday 3-9 PM and Saturday 9 AM until the time of service. For further information, please phone 248-684-6645.
