Obituary for Ralph W. Wiese

Ralph W. Wiese, a resident of Novi, Michigan, formerly of Milford, Michigan and Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully at Providence Park Hospital on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. He was 83 years old.

Born on October 7, 1929 in Detroit, he was the son of Albert C. and Mabel (nee Washburne) Wiese. He grew up in Royal Oak and graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1947 and attended Cornell University where he studied electrical engineering, returning to Michigan where he graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1951. He joined the U.S. Army and served from 1951-54 achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He returned to school, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1956 and in July that year began his professional career with General Motors Proving Grounds working his way through the Noise and Vibration Department, heading the department of Experimental Engineering, serving as Director of Emissions Lab before serving as Manager of the Milford Proving Ground from 1982-1987. Throughout his professional career he was deeply involved in Milford Civic life during a period of great growth. He served for many years on the Village Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals for both the Village and Township and was first Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Village Economic Development Corporation. He served on the Charter Revision Commission and the Huron Valley Schools Millage Committee. He was a member and director of the Milford Jaycees and was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1986 he was honored as Milfords Citizen of the Year. He was a long time member of the Milford Historical Society, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Tau Beta Pi Association and a member of Milford Presbyterian Church. Long a member of the Board of Trustees of the Detroit Medical Center, he was instrumental in bringing the Huron Valley Hospital to the area serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1976-1993 and guided the effort to bring quality medical care to the Huron Valley area from early planning to fruition and into the future.

Ralph Wiese was a gifted leader, a natural organizer and analyst whose talents for fixing and repairing and making things work proceeded from his engineers ever curious mind, which remained throughout his life, eager and teachable. It was a gift he shared with what surely was his most beloved endeavor -- his family. He loved nothing more than a big family barbecue around the pool, watching the generations rise up around him and tracing the roots of the genealogy that made him both the paterfamilias and chief cook and bottle washer.

He is survived by his beloved colleague in that endeavor, his wife of 61 years, Marilyn (nee Wiley) and their children, Richard Wiese, Thomas (Kelly) Wiese, Mary (David) Carr, Steven (Kari) Wiese; grandchildren, Christina (Paul) DeLeeuw, Tiffany (Jason) Ziemba, Lindsay (Marc) Edgcombe, Gretchen, Mitchell and Brandon Wiese, James and Joshua Shepard, Jordan and Kristie Carr, Megan (Levi) Rodrigues, Alexander and Brooke Wiese; great-grandchildren Evelyn DeLeeuw, Cailey and Molly Edgcombe. Also survived by many extended family members, dear friends and colleagues and a grateful community who mourn the passing of a good man and give thanks to God for his life among them.

Funeral services will be at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Tuesday, April 9 at 10 AM. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery, Milford. Visitation on Monday 3-9 PM. Memorials encouraged to:
