Obituary for Ray Kent Brown, Jr., M.D., Ph.D

Ray Kent Brown, Jr., M.D., Ph.D, died peacefully on June 1, 2018 at the age of 94.

Ray was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 7, 1924 to Ray S. Brown and Grace N. (nee Nunemaker) Brown M.D. He spent most of his childhood in Grandview Heights and graduated from that high school in 1942. He entered Ohio State University and received a B.S. summa cum laude in 1944, an M.D. cum laude in 1947 and a M.S. in Physical Chemistry in 1948. After a years internship at Boston City Hospital, he began graduate work in the College of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1951. He did research at the National Institutes of Health from 1951 to 1953 when he became an Assistant Director of the Division of Laboratories and Research of the New York State Department of Health Albany, NY. He became Associate Director in 1959. During this interval, he had an appointment at Albany Medical College becoming a full professor in 1961. He became chairman of Biochemistry at Wayne State University School of Medicine and served from 1963 to 1987. He especially enjoyed teaching medical and graduate students. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1996. 

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, and the U.S. Public Heath Service from 1951 to 1953. He was a founding member who served 28 years on the Highland Township Planning Commission. Hobbies included flower gardening and genealogy. He was a member of several scientific societies and is listed in Who’s Who in America. He published 53 papers chiefly on the proteins of blood.

Beloved husband of Dorothy Brown, Ph.D.; father of Kimberly Brown, Ph.D., Kitene (Hume) Kading, and Kevin (Pam) Brown; stepfather of Debra (Scott) Sellers and Kathleen (Gary) Brooks; grandfather of Thomas (Nicole), August and Lydia Kading and Karalea Lane; step-grandfather of Jason and Jordan (Sandra) Sellers and Austin and Logan Brooks, and great-grandfather of William Lane and Raymond Lax and Ryder Kading; step-great-grandfather of Lily Sellers; brother-in-law of William (Marcia) Price. Also leaves loving extended family members and dear friends. Preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude (d. 1998), step-grandsons, Joshua Sellers (d. 2011) and Dylan Brooks (d. 2017).

A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 11 AM, with gathering beginning at 10:40 AM.
