Obituary for Rex L. Wood

Rex L Wood., age 88 of Highland Township and Avon Park, Florida, died on October 12, 2012.

Born on September 26, 1924 in Ferris Township, Michigan, the son of Myron and Jennie (Bollinger) Wood, he grew up in Vestaburg, where he was a 1941 graduate of Vestaburg High School. He was a 1948 graduate of Alma College, a time which was interrupted by his service in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. He received his Masters at the University of Michigan, and later attended Michigan State University where he earned his Doctorate in Education.

He went on to teach in Edmore from 1948-53, served as Superintendent in Ellsworth from 1953-55 and in Weidman from 1955-59, lectured at MSU from 1959-60, and served as Deputy Superintendent of Oakland School from 1960 until his retirement in 1983. Dr. Wood said his greatest career satisfaction was having the opportunity to work with his peers in Oaklands local school districts and with his colleagues at Oakland Schools, and the consultants and support staff members dedicated to the same goals and objectives.

He enjoyed summering in Michigan, wintering in Florida, and opportunities for family activities with his children, grandchildren, and brothers and sisters. He loved dabbling on his computer, pitching horseshoes and participating in tournaments during the summer and winter months, and was a proud member of Edmore Masonic Lodge #360.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Jean in 2009, and a grandson, Rex.
He is survived by children, Pamela (Kim) Troyer, Cheryl (Doug) Phillips, Brian Wood, and Debra Steen; eight grandsons, two granddaughters, thirteen great grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at Highland United Methodist Church, 680 W. Livingston Road, Highland, on Monday, October 15, at 11AM with the Rev. James Kummer officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made in his name to the National Parkinson Foundation, Odyssey Hospice 25925 Telegraph Road, Southfield, MI 48033, or Highland United Methodist Church.
