Obituary for Richard George "Dick" Schiller

Richard George "Dick" Schiller, age 80, and a resident of Hartland Township, passed away peacefully at home in the care of his family on September 15th, 2020 after battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy for several years.

Richard was a devout family man and had a deep love of God, his country, and freedom: he served in the Army National Guard, following his father and brothers who had served in the military in various armed conflicts.

Richard received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Wayne State and his Chemistry Degree from Lawrence Tech, which he would use while working for the gas company, then known as ANR Pipeline and MichCon. Richard retired early which allowed him to spend more time with his family and attend his son Jonathan's many sporting and other events through high school and college. He used his love of nature and science to cultivate a garden and many fruit and nut trees on his 10 acres in Hartland, up until the PSP made it too difficult.

Richard also loved fishing, volleyball and baseball. He played shortstop and third base for his Church (Cornerstone EPC in Brighton) and MichCon, excelling as a fielder. He loved taking trips to Northern Michigan to visit Henry and Linda Kalchik (niece) and Tom (nephew) and Paula Fabis and to catch whatever was biting at the time - walleye, bass, or sometimes even catfish.

On May 3rd, 1986, Richard married Janet (Bagwell) Schiller at Ward Presbyterian Church, and Janet remained by his side, caring for him lovingly until the end.

On July 2nd, 1987, Richard and Janet celebrated the arrival of their only son, Jonathan, who is married to Amy, and they are parents to Richard's only granddaughter, Adaline Schiller, who provided Richard much joy in the last two years.

Richard is survived by his wife, Janet; his son, Jonathan, and Jonathan's wife Amy; granddaughter Adaline Schiller; brothers Leonard Schiller (late Betty), Frederick "Fred" Schiller and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and dear friends. He was preceded in death by parents, August and Margaret (Kirstowski) Schiller, and siblings, Carl (Evelyn), Henry "Hank" (Virginia), Margaret, Loraine, William "Bill" (Phyllis), Ruth Fabis (Joe) and Dorothy Trongo (Louis).

Outdoor Viewing will be on Tuesday, September 22 from 2:00pm to 6:30pm at the family home in Hartland.

Due to COVID and for the safety and protection of all, especially the most vulnerable, and in respect of the funeral home staff, we are asking that you wear a mask and practice social distancing with those outside of your immediate family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name at CurePSP.org
