Obituary for Richard Gerald Gardner

Richard Gerald Gardner, 74, of Milford, Michigan and proud veteran of the United States Navy, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022.

Richard a true hard-working family man, selfless, and always putting other people first.

He was born in Wayne, Michigan on April 10, 1948 to the late Gerald and Marion Gardner. He grew up in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Following high school, he received an associate’s degree in mechanics from Ferris State University before joining the United States Navy where he served in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan as a tugboat mechanic on a repair ship. Before leaving over seas, Richard married the love of his life, Sharon Tyler. After he returned, the two of them started a family and were blessed with three children and four grandchildren. They raised their children in Plymouth, Michigan before moving to Milford, Michigan in 2004, where Sharon grew up, and he has resided ever since. Richard later went back and received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Central Michigan University.

Richard loved life and enjoyed every minute. He had a gift of gab, could talk to anyone, and always made you feel like the only person in the world. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. There were numerous fishing trips to Canada, camping trips to the U.P. visiting some beautiful places, and of course, being on his boat fishing anywhere, especially trolling for walleye and perch on Lake Erie. He was a true sports fan, a University of Michigan football fan and ticket holder, a hockey fan, player, and coach. His quick witted sense of humor and zest for life made him many friends along the way. He cherished those relationships, many of them going back to childhood of whom he always stayed in touch.

He spent his career at Chrysler where he was a “carburetor guru” and traveled the world showing others his ways. He was well respected by his peers, and was always known for being a guy who could fix anything by taking it apart and making it better before putting it back together,. After retiring from Chrysler as a mechanical engineer for over 35 years, he truly enjoyed working in the Kensington Metro Park at the splash pad for the last 12 years. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and all who crossed his path.

Beloved husband of Sharon for 52 years. Loving father of Jason Gardner (Kelly), Andrea Romanuk (Kyle), and Linsay Gardner. Proud Papa of Mackenzie Romanuk, T.J. Romanuk, Aubrey Gardner, and Ryan Gardner. Dear brother of Kay Bolser (Ferd) and Linda Gardner.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 from 12-6pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty St. Milford, MI 48381.
