Obituary for Richard J. McKee

Richard J. McKee, of Milford, MI passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, June 15, 2022. He was 91 years old.

He was born at the family home in White Lake, Michigan to parents Jay F. and Mamie M. (Duncan) McKee on March 9, 1931. Richard graduated from Milford High School. He married his high school sweetheart Vera Jill Montgomery on August 7, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1950, Richard, an avid baseball player, tried out with the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium (renamed Tiger Stadium in 1961). While he did not make the team, the experience was one of the many highlights of his life and he remained a true fan of the Detroit team. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Richard served during the Korean War.

A graphic designer, Richard spent 40 years working for General Motors. He had the opportunity to work on corporate identification programs during those years as well as creating logos for municipalities and civic organizations. Richard received National, State and local recognition for many of his designs. If you travel to Battle Creek, you will see the city symbol he designed displayed on city banners, signs and vehicles. Richard also created the design for the logo for his beloved Village of Milford. A flag he designed as part of the “New Glory” flag contest for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art received an award, was exhibited at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. and toured America with the Smithsonian Sites Program.

Richard served on the White Lake Township Planning Commission and was a one of the founding members of the Huron Valley Council for the Arts and a member of the Village Fine Arts Association in Milford for many years. His water colors and drawings were often displayed during his membership.

A true artist, he saw art everywhere - whether it was in nature or while on a road trip. Stopping to take pictures of flowers or providing critique on the layout of a road sign. After his retirement Richard and Jill were frequent visitors of the local coffee houses. He loved his cappuccino and lattes. The couple spent many afternoons in downtown Milford at the Proving Grounds coffee shop.

Richard was a good man who had a wonderful journey.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jill (nee. Montgomery) McKee; his children, Cheryl (Paul) Szpaichler, Michele (John) Foley and Larry (Diane) McKee; grandchildren, Derek, Kevin, David, Erin, Stephen and Leeanne; his 10 great-grandchildren as well as many close friends and extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Sean L. McKee, his sister, Betty Grace Grimshaw and his parents Jay and Mamie McKee.

Memorial contributions are encouraged in Richard’s name to the Huron Valley Council for the Arts.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Life for Richard McKee to share memories and stories with the family at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at the HVCA (Huron Valley Council for the Arts), 205 W. Livingston Rd, Highland, MI. 48357.
