Richard L. Vanderhovel, age 81 and a resident of Wixom, passed on August 2, 2013.
Born on January 25, 1932, the only child of Lewis and Irene Vanderhovel, Richard grew up in Detroit and worked summers at his uncles orchard farms in Hart, Michigan. After graduation from Cooley High School he attended the Detroit Business University where he was Valedictorian of his class. It was at the college that he met Dolores Gray. They fell in love and married on June 20, 1953, making their home in N.W. Detroit, and later Farmington Hills, before moving to their home in Wixom in 1995.
Early in his career Richard worked for several accounting firms and in 1969 began his own accounting and tax firm. When his son Dave joined the business, Vanderhovel & Associates P.C., moved their office to the Klebba building in Wixom. Dick dearly loved his work, was proud to be an enrolled agent, a longstanding member of the I.A.A.M., and reported to the office each week until he retired a few years ago.
Dick and Dolores were blessed with the births of two sons and he taught his sons well, serving as Cub Master for their Scout group and took his family on countless camping trips to Northern Michigan. He was a history buff, with a special interest in WWII, enjoyed listening to the Detroit Tigers and Lions on the radio and loved Big Band music and dancing with Dolores.
In addition to Dolores, his beloved wife of sixty years, he is survived by his sons, Dave (Catherine) Vanderhovel and Bruce Vanderhovel; grandsons, Kiel, Ryan, Jason, and Nicholas; his brother-in-law, Chuck Gray, sister-in-law, Marie Gray, and many dear friends and colleagues who join his family in both mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Wednesday, August 7, at 10AM. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 6, 3-9PM and Wednesday from 9AM until the time of service. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
