Obituary for Robert "Bob" Stanley Copi

Robert Stanley Copi ascended to heaven on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the age of 71. To many he was known as Bob, but his favorite people called him Dad, Papa or Uncle.

Bob was born January 17, 1951 in Monroe, MI. He attended Monroe Catholic Central and graduated in 1969. He very much enjoyed his high school years spent making friends and making jokes. Most importantly, it was during those years that he met the love of his life, Janice Poupard. Jan and Bob were married August 21, 1970. In 1971, Bob joined the US Air Force and was very proud of his time in the service. Bob and Jan together moved to Minot, North Dakota where he was stationed. Bob received a Military Medal for heroically saving lives during a fire he fought while in Minot. He then was a fire fighter in Thailand during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1975. Bob went on to work hard to support his family, starting in construction and moving on to work in the steel industry. For many years he served as the Operations Manager of Precision Steel in Toledo, OH. Bob ended his working days as a supervisor at the Visteon Automotive Plant in Saline, MI.

Bob and Jan grew a beautiful family together during their almost 52 years of marriage. They raised three children and were very involved in the raising and loving of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob loved to be the helper who showed up to trim a tree, mow a lawn or fix a toilet. He gave advice, but most importantly, gave absolute unconditional love. Bob and Jan spent most of their years in the Monroe, MI area. They moved to Hartland, MI in 2017. Shortly after moving to Hartland, they began attending Church services at the Highland Church of the Nazarene. Bob quickly came to love this church and the people who were part of it. He spent as much time as he could helping with maintenance of any kind that was needed, inside or outside. He would show up during preschool hours to greet the kids and help the teachers with any task they could give him. Bob’s heart was full when he was spending time serving God in this way and getting to put a smile on the faces of so many. Bob was a board member and he was even honored by the church, receiving the Distinguished Service Award in August of 2021.

Bob’s favorite place to be was at his family’s hunting cabin in the far Northern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Bob, his father, brothers, son, grandsons, and nephews all made many memories together there. They had friends there for generations. His Skanee friends were as much family to him as any. It was his final wish to get to visit one last time, which he did weeks before his passing.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother Julia (Curley) Copi, father Edward Copi and nephew Philip Copi.

Bob will forever be loved and missed by his wife Janice Copi; children Robert E. (Becki) Copi, Susan Smith, Heather (Michael) Tate; Grandchildren Chelsea (Ryan) Wickenheiser, Drew Bowlin, Jeff Copi, Tyler Smith, Megan Smith, Julia Brescol, Emma Brescol, Reece Tate, and Isabella Smith; and great grand children Grace, Braxton, Ridley, and Rowan. Bob will also be always cherished by his siblings William (Dorothy) Copi, Linda (Wayne) Lochner, Alan (Beth) Copi, Raymond (Cari) Copi, and Sandra (Bill) Butler and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Funeral Services will be officiated by Bob’s dear friend, Pastor Mike Hefner at 11am on Monday, June 27th at the Monroe Church of the Nazarene located at 3401 S. Custer Rd. Monroe, MI 48161. A luncheon will follow. A dessert or dish to pass is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Highland Church of the Nazarene so they can continue Bob’s work or to the American Cancer Society. We ask that flowers not be sent.
