Obituary for Robert C. Bonish

Robert Charles “Bob” Bonish, a longtime resident of Milford and native of Detroit, died peacefully at home on October 27, 2019 after a valiant battle with lung cancer. He was 74 years old.

Born in Detroit on April 6, 1945, the son of Julius Lawrence Bonish and Pauline Blanche (nee Fedasz) Bonish, Bob grew up in the family’s Bonish Photo Studio on Warren Avenue and was a graduate of Chadsey High School. Bob possessed a strong faith and a generous heart, traits he inherited from his mother. He prayed the rosary several times a day and prayed for everyone, just as his mother did, and people came to him with prayer requests. Bob was very active with his church, St. Mary’s in Milford and Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a honorary member of the Holy Spirit Women’s club, where his apron was adorned “women’s club slave”.

Following high school, Bob began work at Ford Motor Company and was drafted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following training in Fort Hood, Texas he assisted with the riots in Chicago and Detroit. A friend set him up with a pen-pal, the young Judy Deschamps, and the two exchanged many letters before reluctantly agreeing to meet during his first leave in June of 1967. It was love at first sight for Bob and Judy and they were married on October 25, 1968, one week after Bob’s return home from the Army.

Bob and Judy made their home in Dearborn and spent summers camping at Camp Dearborn in Milford. They eventually settled down in Milford in 1977, where they raised their five children. Bob continued his work at Ford Motor Company, his “mistress”, and during this time he also completed his Master’s in Business and Accounting. He finally retired in 1997 as the Company Vehicle Manager. Following retirement, Bob owned a floral delivery service, owned the Red Dog Saloon from 2000-2008, owned two apartment buildings and a rental house. In his free time, he loved to fish and became an excellent housekeeper and cook. For the last ten years, he was also active with Lakes Area Right to Life.

Bob was a man of great faith and of great love for his family and friends. His unique sense of humor will leave a lasting memory of laughter for all who had the pleasure of meeting him. His continuous dedication and kind heart made for a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

He will be missed by many, especially Judy, his beloved wife of fifty-one years; his daughter, Monica Donovan; his sons, Patrick (Cindy) Bonish and Joe (Tara) Bonish; grandchildren, Courtney (Joe VanderBroek) Thompson, Tim “Austin” Thompson, Megan Thompson, Morgan Donovan, Ryan Donovan, Donielle Waters; great grandson, Jazper; brother, Leo (Kathy) Bonish, and sister-in-law Patricia (Ralph) Ascencio as well as many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy and his son, Robb.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Friday, November 1, from , with a Rosary in the evening. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, on Saturday, November 2, at 11AM. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged in his name to Lakes Area Right to Life, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or to Boys Town. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
