Obituary for Robert E. Schwartz

Robert E. Bob Schwartz, a longtime resident of Milford, died at his home, in the care of his family, on Monday morning, February 9, 2009 after a three year battle with cancer. He was 62 years old. Born on November 14, 1946 in Mt. Clemens, Bob was the son of Carl and Evelyn (Kuenzli) Schwartz. He graduated from Warren High School in the Class of 1965 and joined the U.S. Army with whom he was stationed in Georgia working in communications. After his service, he came home, went to work on the line at Ford Motor while attending college with plans of becoming a registered nurse. Bob trained to become a paramedic and went to work with the Bloomfield Township Fire Department in 1976. He retired as Assistant Fire Chief in 2003 after 27 years of service with that department. During the same time he worked as a volunteer with Milford Township Fire Department, working with that department until the time of his death. Bob was an instructor at Oakland Community College where he taught fire science classes with the C.R.E.S.T. Center. It was his public service in Milford Township that brought him frequently into the township offices where he met Colleen Redman in the Township Clerks office. The couple was married in 1992, blending their families and lives together and continuing to serve their home community.
Bob Schwartz loved golf and fly-fishing, woodworking and gardening, photography and painting watercolors. He loved to cook, and planned great family feasts for holidays, summer barbeques and quiet dinners at home with Colleen. When in-laws visited from Japan he prepared great all-American meals. When kids and grandkids came for Christmas he would do a pheasant or goose. He loved friends, fellow firefighters, his community and family.
He is survived by his wife Colleen, their sons and daughters, Ronnie (Shannon)Schwartz of Tennessee, Wendy Duley of White Lake, Stephen (Charla Jo) Finley of Kentucky, Heather (John) McKinzie of Wayne, and Zachary(Holly) Schwartz, U.S. Navy, Norfolk, VA. Also 11 grandchildren, and a large circle of extended family and friends, not least among them, his beloved dog, Eddie, all of whom join with his family in mourning Bobs death and giving thanks to God for his life among them.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 12, at 11 AM at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford. Chaplains from Bloomfield and Milford Townships Fire Departments will officiate. Military Honors and Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from Noon until 9PM.
Memorials may be made to the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center or the Bellowood Animal Rescue, 2985 16 Mile Rd. NE, Cedar Springs, MI 49319. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
