Obituary for Robert G. LaMont

Robert “Bob” G. LaMont, a resident of Milford and a former longtime resident of Westland, died surrounded by his family on September 17, 2019. He was 78 years old.

Bob was born on August 25, 1941 in Mount Clemens, Michigan, the oldest child of four born to parents, Gordon and Ann (nee. Tilli) LaMont. Following graduation from high school, Bob enlisted with the United States Air Force. He had a love of planes and flying and was proud of his time in the Air Force as part of the strategic air command in Maine where he painted B-52s. Following his return to Detroit, Bob studied liberal arts and psychology and was a lifelong learner. He was a skilled tinkerer and creator, had an active imagination, took up many hobbies in retirement and most recently began learning Egyptian hieroglyphics. He was a perfectionist and a realist, which suited him well in his career as an electrical engineer for over forty years. He was a mentor to many through his years at the Hyde & Bobbio and Smith Group.

In 1970, Bob met Julie Schimm on a blind date where they were introduced by mutual friends. The couple quickly fell in love and persevered through silly challenges through the first few dates, including car trouble and Bob being soaked by sprinklers, and were married almost exactly one year later on August 21, 1971. Bob and Julie made their home in Dearborn Heights and Canton before settling in Westland, where they welcomed their two children, Jeffrey and Amy.

Bob’s greatest hobby was his family. He loved spending Michigan summers in Quincy on the lake with his family, the camper, a Fishing Boat and his Pontoon aptly named “Green Machine”. Cooking, Eating, fishing and 50-60’s music brought him joy. Bob also had a special bond with the family pets, including his late Golden Retrievers, Nugget and Dusty, and his “adopted” cats who helped him through two heart surgeries and brought him a lot of comfort and companionship.

He was empathetic, giving and gregarious but also humorous and could be quite the daredevil and trickster. He led by example and taught his children how to be strong, independent and successful. Bob and Julie moved in with Amy and Mike a couple years ago and he enjoyed being together at “Brennberry Castle”. Bob had a gift for giving — following his second surgery, he began volunteering in Security at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills as a way to give back. He took his role at the hospital seriously and truly was proud of the work he did.

He will be deeply missed by many, especially his loving wife of forty eight years, Julie; son, Jeffrey; daughter, Amy (Michael) Brennan; grandchildren, Trevor and Emily; brothers, Stephen (Pamela) and Thomas (Cathy); sister-in-law, Janis (Bob) Donovan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends and furry companions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Ann (nee. Tilli) LaMont and sister, JoAnn.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11 AM. Friends may visit the funeral home on Friday, September 20th, from 3-8 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Michigan Humane Society.
