Obituary for Robert G. Wurtz

Robert G. Wurtz, a longtime resident of Highland Township, passed away on October 6, 2015.

Rob was born on January 16, 1956 in Long Island, New York, the youngest child of three to Robert and Mary (nee Hancock) Wurtz. The family moved to Michigan in 1959. Rob graduated from Ferndale High School, and went on to attend Wayne State University, where his father was a professor.

In 1977, Rob met the love of his life, Kimberly Jarvis, at Kensington Metropark where he was a lifeguard and Kim was working in tolling and operations. The couple married on June 13, 1987 and built a home in Highland Township in 1988.

Photography was a childhood hobby, and with his skills and talents Rob built a very successful career in the industry - most recently working as the manager of integrated marketing communications for AM General in Livonia, where he was involved in the many aspects of producing and marketing military vehicles. He photographed weddings, chronicled vacations and documented special occasions for family and friends.

In recent years Rob and his German Shepherd, Diamond, have trained with the National Association of Professional K9 handlers where, as a team, they have earned several certifications. Rob has also donated much of his time and talents to the Michigan War Dog Memorial.

Rob enjoyed scuba diving, and with his brother, family and friends, made yearly trips to different locations, traveling extensively in the Caribbean and Central America. This year the destination was Costa Rica. Rob had also traveled to Europe, visiting Germany, Paris, Greece and London.

While not really a handyman or into manual labor Rob loved power tools, evidenced by the extensive power tool collection he owned. Rob was always willing to help someone. If someone needed a power tool that Rob didn’t have, Rob would go out and buy it, let them borrow it and then add to his collection.

He was outgoing, deeply caring, a loyal friend and "just damn fun". Rob had a passion for life which he shared with everyone….whether they wanted it or not. It was impossible not to love Rob.

He is survived by Kimberly Jarvis, his wife of 28 years; his beloved German Shepherds, Maverick and Diamond; father, Dr. Robert E. (Betty) Wurtz; brother, David (Sharon McMurray) Wurtz; sister, Lisa (Robert) Scott; in-laws, Karyn (Jeff) LeBlanc, Kathy (Tom) Vavoso, Matt Jarvis, Kelly Claxton, Krissy Jarvis; nieces and nephews, Michael (Erin) Scott, Karen (Neal) Rusche, Adam Scott, Kaitlin and Gregory Vavoso, Samantha Claxton.; and many extended family members and friends. He will always be remembered for his outgoing, deeply caring nature and was known to many as "just damn fun".

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 4 PM. The Rev. James Kummer to officiate.
