Obituary for Robert Lee Edwards

Robert Lee Edwards, a resident of Commerce Township and native of Garden City, died on April 18, 2017 after having been diagnosed with cancer in December. He was 63 years old.

Rob was born on July 22, 1953 in Dearborn to parents Robert and Jennie (nee. Aiello) Edwards.

During his Junior and Senior High School years Robert was very involved in art, wood-working and baseball, even having tried out for the Detroit Tigers.  Rob moved on to the horse racing industry, and traveled the country training thoroughbred race horses in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky and Illinois. He eventually settled in Solvane, California, north of Santa Barbara at “Flag Is Up Farms”,  a 200 acre training and breeding farm for 3 years as a trainer.

After coming home but wanting to travel more, Rob moved to Oahu, Hawaii where he was employed as a carpenter at Scholefield Barracks at Fort Shaffer for about 2 years.  He returned home again, using his woodworking skills as a carpenter to remodel kitchens, build additions in both commercial and residential construction, and complete full home renovations in Bloomfield Hills and Fisher Mansion restorative work. He attended Lawrence Institute of Technology earning Certification in Insurance Estimating, FEMA certification, and numerous other certifications.  He was most proud of his FEMA certification which could send him anywhere a disaster had occurred.

Rob was a member of the Detroit Historical Society. He earned the title of Journeyman Carpenter in the Michigan Regional Carpenter Union.  He was a master of all trades. Rob saw some of the most amazing parts of the United States, always wanting to settle in California.

Rob was board member of the St Andrews Society of Michigan and spent numerous hours volunteering at the Highland Games held each August in Livonia, MI.

To be closer to his family Rob settled in Commerce Township, Michigan. In December of 2016 he was diagnosed with stage four esophogeal cancer. He successfully completed radiation therapy and was able to “ring the bell” as a survivor and had just began chemotherapy.

He is survived by his brother, John (Marcie) Edwards, and niece, Cami Edwards, of West Bloomfield; cousins, Josie (Norm) Cynowa, George (Terri) Modica, David Modica, Christine (Richard) Koziatek, Pam (John) Douglass, Susan (William) Steinmetz, Tom (Josie) Klocke, Rob (Karen) Klocke, Susan (David) Pipe, Carol Grenon, Christina Bondy, Phillip (Sheryl) Grenon, Paul Grenon, Gary Grenon and many second, third and fourth cousins in California, Chicago, Colorado, Virginia, Kentucky, Southeast Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jennie Edwards.
