Obituary for Robert Red Muirhead

Robert Harlan Red Muirhead, a longtime resident of Milford, died August 15, 2012 , after a brief illness. He was 82 years old.

A native Detroiter, he was the youngest son of George and Emma (Finzel) Muirhead. He graduated from Cooley High School where he met and fell in love with Barbara Dicks who would meet him at the soda shop after school. They were married on September 10 in 1948 and together they raised a daughter and three sons. Red went to work in the building trades that were booming after World War II and was a union brick mason for 65 years, eventually becoming a foreman and building many churches in the metro area where he would invariably become friends with the pastor. Among his best friends was the late Fr. Herman Kucyk, longtime pastor of Dearborn Divine Child Parish, one of the many churches Red built in his long career. Red Muirhead liked a well wrought brick wall, mortar that was mixed to bind and hold, things done on the level and plumb; he loved family dinners and a yard full of friends and travel with his wife of 64 years. Wherever he went he invariably found men like himself working on something made of brick and stone. Even when he didnt speak their language, hed find a way to pitch in, grabbing a trowel and laying down a course of bricks in many of the countries he and Barb visited. He brought home stones from his travels which he built into the fireplace mantel in his billiard room where he played on his 126 by 66 snooker table. In the permanent properties of brick and mortar and stone, he saw a metaphor for the strong ties that bind families and friends and generations together. He was a man of quiet faith, and a longtime member of Milford Presbyterian Church. In fact he felt at home in churches of various denominations, his easy humor and generous spirit making conversation with him easy. In 2004 he won the Acts of Kindness Award from Smooth Jazz Radio 98.7.

Red Muirhead is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Barbara, their daughter Linda (Gordon) Grossman, and sons, Donald (Shelby), Tom (Cathy), David (Sandy); also seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a host of loving extended family members and dear friends who join in mourning the death of a good man and giving thanks to God for Reds life and love and good example.

A Memorial Service will be held at Milford Presbyterian Church, 238 N. Main Street, Milford on August 25, 2012 at 11 AM. Rev. Anne Schaefer to officiate. Memorials may be made to Residential Hospice of Madison Heights, Milford Presbyterian Church or Fountain Living Water Church, P.O. Box 24, Milford, MI 48381, with proceeds to the mentally challenged homeless of Detroit.
