Obituary for Robert Tata

Robert Tata, resident of Birmingham for 60 years, died peacefully in the care of Angela Hospice and his loving family on Wednesday September 28, 2016. He was 90 years old.

Born in Detroit on February 13, 1926 he was the son of Francesco and Antonia (Martini) Tata. Bob grew up on the east side on Willis Street until he was fourteen when his family moved to Mark Twain in northwest Detroit. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1944 and soon after was inducted into the US Army, training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. He was a member of a 26-man artillery crew serving in France during World War II. After the war, he attended Lawrence Institute of Technology on the GI Bill where he studied Architectural Engineering. He worked for the Argonaut Realty Division of General Motors for forty years, during which time he also became a Registered Architect. After his retirement from General Motors, he worked with the architectural firm of Kevin Hart & Associates in Birmingham well into his eighties.

In the spring of 1947, Bob met Jeanne Marie Noel at the Youth Club of Precious Blood Parish in Detroit. He was the editor and she the assistant editor of the youth club newsletter. They continued to see each other during the summer and fall of that year and married at Christmas time. Bob and Jeanne lived in Lincoln Park until 1956. They then moved to Birmingham where they raised their two daughters and five sons. This family home served as a gathering place for family and friends for six decades.

Raised during the Great Depression Bob had a talent for the second hand. He refurbished old tools, bikes and lawn mowers acquired from curbside recycle, which he’d repair and pass on to family and friends. He often gave a toolbox of field-tested hammers and household tools to new homeowners in the family. His garage on Berkshire Drive was an ever- changing inventory of the freshly painted, newly repaired, reconditioned and restored pieces of furniture, equipment, or toys. Bob Tata saw in the discarded, damaged and seemingly useless things, something worthy of saving or restoring.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of Holy Name and later St. Regis parishes in Birmingham where he ushered and attended daily mass. He served on the Westchester Village Neighborhood Planning Committee for many years. Although Bob and Jeanne loved their travels to Europe and Japan, it was the family picnics, birthdays and holiday gatherings that Bob most enjoyed.

Preceded in death by his parents and three siblings - Minnie, Nancy, and Primo. Bob Tata is survived by Jeanne, his beloved wife of 68 years, and by their children, Julie Tata Young (Patrick Young) of Ann Arbor, Nicholas Tata (Kuniko Sasahara) of Osaka, Japan, Mary Tata (Thomas Lynch) of Milford, Paul Tata (Martha Bornak) of Traverse City, Martin Tata (Kathleen Fitzgerald) of Brighton, Peter (Joanne) Tata of Austin TX and John (Ann) Tata of Madison Heights; his grandchildren, John (Jennifer) Young, George (Kasumi) Tata, Marie (Ray) Seo, James Tata and Paul Tata and great grandchildren, Emma Marie Young and Allen Tata. Also surviving are his brother Frank and his wife Mary, several nieces and nephews, in-laws and dear friends, who join Bob’s family in mourning the death of a good man while giving thanks for his long life, hard work, abiding love and devotion.

Friends may call at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 11 AM until 1 PM, when a funeral service will be held. The Rev. Doug McMunn to officiate. Cremation will follow.
