Obituary for Roland C. Hansen

Roland Clifford was born April 9, 1930 to Clifford and Isabelle Hansen in Roseville, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. He attended Lincoln School and graduated from Roseville High School in 1948. He was on the Cheerleading Squad and played Varsity Baseball his Senior year. During his Junior year he was in the Junior Play, and on the Yearbook Staff his Senior year.
In 1949 he married Eleanor Kroos. They had four sons, Roland Conrad, Steven Joseph, Jeffrey Clifford and Paul Gregory. He worked as a sign painter for a few years, doing a lot of custom sign work for Federals Department store and Eastgate Shopping Center in Roseville. Eventually he came to work for General Motors in the early fifties. He worked his way up to eventually become a Senior Production Engineer in the Fisher Body division of GM. He retired from General Motors in 1986.
He enjoyed his retirement fully. He loved doing remodeling work and helped lots of friends and neighbors with remodeling bathrooms, kitchens and basements. He had a good eye for design and could build just about anything out of wood. He and Eleanor built a summer place in East Tawas Michigan in the early 1980s, and yes he built all the interior by himself. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, bowling, billiards and cooking.
Eleanor predeceased him in 1993. Soon after, he met Ann Doyle. They began a new life together starting in East Tawas Michigan. Getting fed up with the Michigan weather, they set out for warmer climates. They spent some time in Florida, but realized it wasnt their ideal place. Eventually they chose Arizona spending a year or two as Snow Birds, and finally becoming permanent residents in Mesa Arizona. They became frequent visitors to ShowLow and Payson, and eventually spent the hot Arizona summers up there in a vacation cottage. Roland and Ann were married in 2001 at St George Church in Apache Junction, AZ.
Travel was also one of his favorite things to do and he and Ann managed to see many places across the US setting out on one of their famous road trips. Highlights included Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park and a cruise to Alaska and an annual trip to Michigan, including a 2009 trip this past July.
Roland is survived by his wife Ann Doyle, his brother Ken and sister-in-law Jean, also of Mesa; his sister Gayle Mathers of Marine City Michigan; his four sons and daughter in-law Janice, grandson Jeffrey and granddaughter Kaitlyn. Also half- brothers Ted Thibert and Leroy Thibert, and half sister Isabella Thibert. Many nieces and nephews and "adopted" grandchildren on both the Doyle and Hansen sides of his large and loving extended family. And of course Maggie.
Roland passed suddenly after a short battle with cancer on the morning of November 21st 2009 with Ann and many family members by his side.
The quote in his senior high school yearbook reads, "When greater men are born, Ill have to see them." Now we know when greater men than Roland are born, we will have to see them.

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, December 4, at 11 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Road, Milford. Fr. Ron Anderson to officiate.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Banner Hospice 1325 N Fiesta Blvd,Ste 1 Gilbert, AZ 85233-1609, or your favorite charity. For further information Lynch & Sons, Milford 248-684-6645.
