Obituary for Ron Savage

Ron Savage, FOX 2 anchor and reporter, and resident of Milford, died on Saturday morning, February 25, 2017, following a cardiac arrest during a training exercise with the Milford Fire Department where he volunteered. Ron was 63 years old.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mitzi; his son, Ronnie; sisters, Pat (Bob) Murphy of Lansing and Elizabeth (Duane Wilson) Savage; brothers, Tom (Karen) Savage and Dave (Sondra) Savage; nieces and nephews, Ann (Sean) Torongeau, Shawn (Sydney) Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Claire, Luke, Seth, and Eli Savage; in-laws, Roy and Phyllis Simon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike Simon, Susie (Oliver) Gonsalves, Russ Simon, Eric (Sandy) Simon and Paul (Tracy) Simon; nieces and nephews, Paul Simon Jr., Ella Simon, Nicole and Andre Gonsalves, Robbie (Karmen) Simon, Alex (Brian) Anton, Haley Simon, Taylor Simon and many many dear friends, colleagues at Fox 2 and brothers with the Milford Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clara Savage.

An EMMY Award-winning journalist, Ron co-anchored Fox 2 News Weekends. He produced Michigan's Most Wanted segments, highlighting crimes that needed to be solved. Police say more than 1,000 dangerous fugitives have been arrested from tips from FOX 2 viewers.

Ron Savage was more than a friendly face that you'd see on TV - he was also dedicated to helping the people of Milford where he volunteered as a firefighter and EMT, as well as helping people across the country.

He was a decorated firefighter who earned two citations for outstanding performance above and beyond the call of duty - one during a commercial factory fire and another for rescuing a critically injured driver from an overturned 18-wheeler.

Ron was an active member of St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, where he was proud to serve as a lector. He also volunteered with Crime Stoppers, The Humane Society, The Autism Society of Michigan, MADD and The American Lung Association.

Ron was funny, loud, and extremely caring. He detailed some of his efforts to help people on social media. In fact, on Friday before he came into work to report, Ron volunteered to help the Salvation Army of Southeast Michigan Bed & Bread Club.

A big camping enthusiast in both the upper and lower peninsula, his favorite hobby was cooking, in mass quantities, and specializing in BBQ smoked ribs, "low and slow" as he liked to say.

Ron was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He took off work for only one thing: his son Ronnie’s sporting events, where he was ever present. He and Ronnie also enjoyed hunting and opportunities to attend Detroit sporting events. His passion was organizing family time and family outings that usually began with a “let’s do something fun!” He will be dearly missed.

His favorite quote came from his late father, a WWII veteran: "You don't have to be perfect, just do your best."
