Obituary for Ronald F. Martin

Ronald F. Martin, a lifelong resident of Commerce, died late Wednesday night at Huron Valley Hospital after a battle with cancer and Crohns disease. He was 67 years old. Ron was born in Detroit on March 22, 1941 into a large Italian and Irish family. The youngest of 7 children born to Eddie and Marie (Tierney) Martin, his place as the baby of the family afforded him both the joys of being the youngest and sorrows of outliving all but one of his siblings. The Martin family was athletic and active; Eddie coached his children in speed skating and roller hockey and it was from him that Ron learned the joys of coaching his own children. A 1959 graduate of Walled Lake Central, he went to work for GM Truck and Bus. Ron met Sally Smith, the love of his life and they were married 43 years. They were blessed with the birth of their first child, Teri, who would soon be followed by her brothers, Kevin and Brad. Like his father before him, Ron was very active in his childrens lives. When Teri played softball Ron coached the team and when Kevin and Brad played hockey he was the coach. Rons kids werent the only ones to benefit from his love of coaching he was a well known and well respected coach at Lakeland Ice Arena for over 20 years. He positively impacted hundreds of young players, instilling in them the love of hockey, the value of good sportsmanship and of course, the thrill of victory. He retired from GM Truck and Bus after more than 30 years and settled down to enjoy his retirement and grandchildren.
A jokester, prankster and all around humorous guy, Ron was always good for a silly joke or story even when his health was failing he entertained those around him. His family, especially those who called him Little Papa were the center of his world and the source of all his joy. He lavished them with his love and attention to the point of spoiling. Even his treasured black lab, Cookie, received special treatment usually reserved for the grandchildren. Friends and family, coworkers, players and neighbors join together to mourn his death and give thanks for his time, and jokes, they shared with him.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Sally; children, Teri, Kevin and Brad (Jill). He was the Little Papa of Tyler, Dylan and Bryce, and Pseudo Little Papa of Devon, Drake, Skylar and Caden. Ron was the beloved brother of Shirley (Richard) Beagle and brother in law of Richard, Virginia, Ivan, Dorothy and Roy. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard, Laverne, Donald, Dode and Bob. Ron also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Monday, June 23, 10 AM with Rev. John Harris officiating. Friends may visit Saturday 4-8 PM & Sunday 1-8 PM. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.. For further information call 248-684-6645.
