Obituary for Roy L. Patterson

Roy Louis Patterson, a long time resident of Highland Township, died on December 7, 2009. He was 75 years old. Born on November 5, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Harry and Elaine (Schutter) Patterson, Roy grew up on St. John Street and later on Harvey Lake in Highland. He was a graduate of Milford High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962. On February 18, 1961 he married his sweetheart, Patsy Gamble at the old Milford Methodist Church on Union Street in Milford. Roy worked for many years as a test driver and in materials handling with the General Motors Proving Grounds, where he enjoyed many friendships and played on the Grounds softball, bowling and golf leagues. He retired in 1991. He was also a very active member of the Highland Fire Department, where he served as Deputy Chief during his twenty-five years there.

Roy joined the Methodist Church twenty-five years ago and was very supportive of the church; he was a member of the Mens Club, served as the Head of the Ushers and offered his support in many other ways. He was active with Laborers For Christ for many years, and labored tirelessly helping to renovate Lutheran churches, college dorms and group homes in Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Roy was always there to help people, neighbors, seniors, whomever the Lord placed on his path. He was also instrumental in helping his family build their homes.

A naturally gifted man, Roy was phenomenal at whatever he applied himself to. Woodworking came easily to him and he had a talent for creating engine models. He was always willing to try new things and give it his best shot. Roy loved bow hunting in Atlanta, Michigan with his brother, Harry. Toby Tyler and Murray Michael were his faithful canine companions and were never far from him. A man of few words, when Roy spoke what he said was meaningful. He and Patsy reminded each other every day how much they loved each other.

In addition to Patsy, his beloved wife of over 48 years, he is survived by his daughter, Amy (Doug) Radeka, and son, Andy Patterson. Also surviving are his mother, Elaine Patterson of Highland; sisters, Donna (Jorge) Pacheco, Glenna (the late Steve) Callaghan; honorary brother, Hugh Vaughn, his aunts, uncle, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends who join his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Patterson, his father, Harry Pat Patterson, brother, Harry Patterson, and his in-laws, Robert and Dorothy Gamble.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Thursday, December 10th, at 11AM. Burial and Military Honors will follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday 3-9PM and Thursday 9AM until the time of service. Memorials may be made in his name to the Highland Goodfellows or to Community Sharing.
