Obituary for Russell Patrick Spletzer

Russell P. Spletzer, of Commerce Township and a former long time resident of Wixom, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 14, 2017 after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Russ was born in Detroit on October 6, 1942, the eldest child of Gustav and Gertrude Spletzer. Russ and his sister, Judith, grew up in Dearborn Heights, and following high school, Russ attended Eastern Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a minor in English. Russ went on to enjoy a forty-two year career with Ford Motor Company in forward timing material control.

Russ met the young Joyce Kelly at a wedding of a mutual friend. Despite their common interest in English, literature and politics, Joyce recalls that she knew Russ was “the one” when she saw him on the dance floor entertaining some of the children. Later that night, she knew for sure, when he chose one special book from her shelf, out of many, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and read a poem aloud. Blessed with a gentle soul and a calm demeanor, Russ complimented Joyce well. The couple married on April 19, 1968 in St. Augustine Catholic Church, made their home in Wixom, and together raised three children. In retirement, Russ and Joyce built their home in Commerce where they could be encompassed by nature.

Russ loved the out-of-doors, traveling, hunting and cooking. He will be remembered most of all for his big heart, quiet nature and passion for his family.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce Kelly Spletzer; sons, Matt (Johanna) and Paul (Khalila Williams); daughter, Meg (Steven) Raminiak; grandchildren, Gustav and Lila Spletzer, Flynn and Tillie Raminiak; sister, Judith (Jay) Jambor as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford on Friday, June 23, from 4-8 PM.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 801 E. Commerce St., Milford on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11 AM, with gathering beginning at 10 AM. The Rev. Paul Castelli to officiate.
