Obituary for Shelby "Sherry" Jean Johnson

Shelby “Sherry” Jean Johnson, of Milford, passed away peacefully at home on June 3, 2019, with her husband of nearly 57 years by her side. The only child of Lawrence and Beatrice (Cook) Flanagan, she grew up in the Syracuse, New York area.

Attending high school in LaFayette, NY she met Russell (Russ) H. Johnson in 1955, and they were married in 1962. Shelby was a gifted musician and pianist, attending the prestigious Crane School of Music at the State University Of New York, Potsdam. She later graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and Teaching from Syracuse University. Possessing a gift and passion for teaching, she briefly taught 7th grade Social Studies in Minoa, NY, but left her beloved Upstate New York to be with Russ during his service in the US Army and his subsequent employment. Shelby and Russ eventually moved to Michigan, where they raised their four children—residing first in Detroit, later In the West Bloomfield and Commerce Township area, and ultimately in Milford Township for the past 16 years, where Shelby has since been a member of St Mary’s Parish.

She was truly her parents’ child, both a tireless “doer” of work (whether supporting her children’s activities, or in her flower and vegetable gardens), and a loving caregiver for animals (whether domestic, wild, or in between). While she worked part time over the years at Hudson’s, the Lakes Area Montessori School, and the National Bank of Detroit, Shelby chose to devote herself and her talents primarily to making a loving home and raising her family—a loss to all the students she never had in a foregone career as a teacher, but an immeasurable and enduring gift to her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Even in the difficult twilight journey of her last 19 months, she gave to all around her—family and caregivers alike—a final blessing: the comfort of an unfailing Irish wit, a profound example of strength and courage, and an indelible witness to her faith in Jesus Christ.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St. on Sunday, June 9th, 2018 from 3 - 7pm.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E Commerce St, Milford, MI 48381, on Monday, June 10th, 2019 at 11 AM with gathering beginning at 10:30 AM.
